Call Me By Your Name 2 With Timothée Chalamet Still A Possibility
Fresh off their recent collaboration on Bones & All, Call Me By Your Name director Luca Guadagnino still wants to make a follow-up with Timothée Chalamet. In the past few years, Chalamet has emerged as one of the most talented young actors of his time, thanks in large part to his role in Call Me by Your Name, a coming-of-age romantic drama directed by Guadagnino. Set in northern Italy during the early 1980s, the LGBTQ+ film follows the fledgling romantic relationship between Chalamet's 17-year-old Elio and a 24-year-old grad student, Oliver (played by Armie Harmer).
Premiering in 2017 at the Sundance Film Festival, Call Me By Your Name received widespread critical reception for providing a powerful portrait of love, bolstered by its lead performances. With a mere budget of $3.5 million, Call Me By Your Name fared well at the box office, with a total of $41.9 million worldwide. It wasn't long before Guadagnino began hinting at the prospect of not one, but several sequels. However, it's been over a year since the director last discussed any progress.
Now, during a recent interview with IndieWire at the Telluride Film Festival promoting Bones & All, Guadagnino says that Call Me By Your Name 2 is still very much a possibility. Though the Italian director isn't too keen on using the word "sequel" since it "is an American concept," Guadagnino says his follow-up films would be more along the lines of "the chronicles of Elio." Read what he shared below:
A sequel is an American concept. It’s more like the chronicles of Elio, the chronicles of this young boy becoming a man. It is something I want to do. It's not as if I left Timothée at the height of his booming success, and then I found him four years later. We kept close. I knew that there was not much time to wait until we worked together, but only for the right project.
Guadagnino last discussed the possibility of Call Me By Your Name 2 in May 2021 saying that, because of his and Chalamet's busy schedules, the sequel is unlikely to happen anytime soon. For now, his desire to collaborate with Chalamet seems to be satiated by their new cannibal romance film, Bones & All, which premiered at Venice to rave reviews. Guadagnino will now move on to directing the Scarface remake and other projects. Meanwhile, Chalamet is occupied with the Dune franchise and is becoming increasingly in demand.
Fresh off the positive response to Bones & All, perhaps there is no better time for Guadagnino and Chalamet to finally make Call Me By Your Name 2 happen, but again, both appear to be preoccupied with other projects. The director has clearly thought a lot about a follow-up film, including its opening shot, setting, and subject matter, but now it seems like just a matter of fully committing to the project. For fans worrying about the Call Me By Your Name follow-up never coming to fruition, perhaps they can rest easy for now knowing Guadagnino still considers it a possibility, just maybe not a priority.
