The Boys Season 2 First Look Images Reveal New Superhero Stormfront
Comic book character Stormfront has officially arrived in first look images of The Boys season 2. The Amazon Prime original was a massive hit upon its release last year, quickly becoming one of the biggest streaming shows of 2019. Amazon fast-tracked production on the second season, eager to keep the momentum going. While news surrounding the highly-anticipated second season has been quiet for a while, it looks like Amazon ready to start hyping it up ahead of The Boys' cast appearing at PaleyFest in Los Angeles on March 15.
The Boys is an adaptation of a popular comic book series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson that provides a subversive look at a typical superhero story. It follows a group of vigilantes, led by Karl Urban's Billy Butcher, as they work to bring down a team of corrupt superheroes known as the Seven. Late last year, a trailer for The Boys season 2 was released at Brazil's CCXP, and while it was light on actual plot details, it promised a lot more gore and shenanigans from the titular Boys. A release date has yet to be announced, but Urban previously suggested season 2 would arrive around mid-2020.
Last July, news broke that You're the Worst star Aya Cash would be joining The Boys, and now EW has provided the first look at her character. Cash will be playing Stormfront, a male character in the comics who is described as a cross between Thor and Shazam. Stormfront is also a villain in the comics, though it sounds like The Boys is taking a slightly different approach with the character, in that they don't want to set her up as a villain right away. Per Cash:

I think she’s here to blow up Vought. She’s here to try to get Vought back to the original idea behind creating superheroes... And she can be quite the feminist. There’s a lot of, I wouldn’t say misdirect, but she also is a very empowered woman.

Stormfront could turn out to be a villain just as dangerous as Homelander (Antony Starr), the sociopathic leader of the Seven, but it also sounds like the two will be going head to head. Cash explains that, when it comes to Homelander, "[He’s] used to everyone being scared of him. She matches him. That’s not to say she doesn’t understand his power and tiptoe around it sometimes, but she’s also willing to challenge him. Ultimately, I think the dynamic between the two is terrifying and will change who Homelander is."
The Boys was largely praised for its fresh look at superheroes in an age where it feels like there's a new comic book adaptation arriving every week. Hopefully it can continue to keep things unique and exciting, though it already sounds like they're off to a good start with the addition of Stormfront. How the Boys will respond to her has yet to be seen, but if she truly is anything like Homelander, fans can expect an epic fight. Hopefully it won't be long before an official release date for The Boys season 2 is announced.
