BBC America’s Killing Eve Renewed For Season 2 Before Series Premiere
If you weren’t already planning to tune in for BBC America’s Killing Eve you might want to rethink those plans, as the series has received an early season 2 renewal. The news comes just days before the series premieres, meaning the network is aware it likely has an Oprhan Black-level hit on its hands. If you’ve seen the trailers for the series or have looked at the talent involved you’ll know why.
Based on the Villanelle novellas by Luke Jennings, Killing Eve is written by the Phoebe Waller-Bridge (Fleabag, Solo: A Star Wars Story) and stars Sandra Oh (Grey’s Anatomy) as Eve, a bored MI5 security agent who wants a chance to prove herself with higher-profile assignments and fieldwork. That chance comes in the form of Jodie Comer’s Villanelle, a highly skilled assassin who quickly becomes obsessed with her pursuer, kicking off an epic and twisted game of cat-and-mouse.
In a statement released by BBC America today, network president Sarah Barnett said:
Killing Eve is not only original and well executed, it also fills a gap in the network’s scheduling, after Orphan Black became one of BBC America’s highest profile original series to date. The series was critically acclaimed, even earning star Tatiana Maslany an Emmy for her amazing portrayal of a gaggle of clones, but it also gave the network a sense of identity that went well beyond Doctor Who or the recently canceled Dirk Gently.
Such a vote of confidence in a new series that has yet to premiere is rare, but it may have an impact on those who were undecided about tuning in right away. With all the television currently floating around out there, it’s difficult enough finding time to watch old favorites. New series that might not be around for a second season naturally take a lower priority. Knowing that Killing Eve will live to kill for another eight episodes may be what the series need to get more people watching from the start.
Killing Eve premieres Sunday, April 8 @8pm on BBC America.
