Avengers: Infinity War Projected to Gross Up to $2 Billion
Avengers: Infinity War is projected to gross up to $2 billion at the worldwide box office, thus setting a new record for the highest-grossing summer release of all-time. The blockbuster movie – directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, and based on a script by Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely – has been out for almost two weeks now, and it already managed to cross $1 billion in record time, while also setting a wide variety of new box office records both at home and abroad.
Right off the bat, Avengers: Infinity War set a new opening weekend record at the U.S. box office with a whopping $257.7 million, surpassing the 2015 behemoth Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Ever since then, the two films have been neck-in-neck with regards to domestic records. Infinity War nabbed several top-grossing single day records, while The Force Awakens still retains the second-weekend box office record. Still, a new report suggests that Avengers 3 just might give the Star Wars film a run for its money, overall.
THR reports that Avengers: Infinity War is now projected to gross between $1.8 billion to $2 billion by the end of its theatrical run. That will make the film the highest-grossing summer release of all-time, topping 2015’s Jurassic World, which currently holds the record with $1.672 billion. However, it’s worth noting that beating Jurassic World won’t make the film the top-grossing movie ever; it still needs to top 1997’s Titanic ($1.843 billion), 2015’s The Force Awakens ($2.068 billion), and 2009’s Avatar ($2.787 billion).
Crossing Jurassic World seems like a given at this point, but crossing Titanic and then going on to surpass The Force Awakens overall may still prove tough, even for a blockbuster film as big as Infinity War. The film has been doing exceptionally well so far, but it will need to perform well in China in order to hit cross those thresholds, seeing as its international haul accounts for a vast majority of its global gross.
Outside of the United States, China is the world’s second-largest moviegoing market – and that notion rings true for several Marvel films. For instance, 2015’s Avengers: Age of Ultron took in a massive $240 million alone from the Middle Kingdom, after all. Even 2016’s Captain America: Civil War managed to snag $180 million of its total $1.15 billion gross from that country as well. While Infinity War continues to pull in hefty sums in virtually every market, it’s going to soon face heavy competition domestically and in many Western markets, so it will need to rely more on China (and other Asian markets) for that final push past Jurassic World, Titanic, and possibly even The Force Awakens.
Regardless of where Avengers: Infinity War ends up on the domestic and global charts, the movie is an irrefutable win for everyone involved – and it just goes to show that superhero movies aren’t going away anytime soon. And now, it’s time to look forward to 2019’s Avengers 4, which is less than a year away and concludes the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first saga.
