Avengers: Infinity War Hits $2 Billion At Worldwide Box Office
Avengers: Infinity War has become just the fourth film in history to hit $2 billion at the worldwide box office. Billed as the culmination of the MCU's first 10 years of interconnected storytelling, the epic crossover event was unquestioningly 2018's most anticipated title and its commercial performance more than reflects that. Shattering the all-time opening weekend record as it entered theaters at the end of April, Infinity War proceeded to rewrite the record books during its run as it marched towards this latest milestone.
The fastest movie ever to $1 billion, it seemed like only a matter of time before Infinity War became a member of an even more exclusive club. Despite the presence of other franchise tentpoles like Deadpool 2 and Solo: A Star Wars Story, Infinity War continued to hold well during its stint in theaters, and a rare extension in China (where it's been doing very well) all but guaranteed Infinity War would cross this plateau. Now, that has officially happened.
Per Forbes, Infinity War's global total is now past $2 billion. With this development, it joins Avatar, Titanic, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens as the only movies to reach this point. Infinity War is also the first movie released in the spring/summer to make this much money. The previous $2 billion grossers all premiered in December.
Even by Marvel's lofty standards, Infinity War did extremely well at the box office. Much of its success can be attributed to the MCU stringing together a collection of critically acclaimed blockbusters that have entertained fans around the world. Three phases into their master plan, some would argue Marvel Studios is the strongest it's ever been, with films like Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok, and Black Panther all drawing large crowds. Infinity War was also the biggest cinematic event this side of The Force Awakens, meaning everyone from die-hard fans to casual audiences didn't want to miss out. There was great interest in seeing just how Marvel was able to pull off a film with this many characters, and viewers seemed to like what they saw.
It'll be interesting to see how next year's Avengers 4 does in comparison to Infinity War. That is essentially the second part of this story, resolving the jaw-dropping cliffhanger that left half the universe dead. There's no denying Avengers 4 will be one of 2019's biggest movies, but typically followups to massive record-breakers make a little less money. Of course, few expected Infinity War to earn as much as it did, so perhaps Marvel can buck expectations again and make another $2 billion as this era comes to a close.
