Avatar's Stephen Lang Cast in Fangoria's Action-Horror Film V.F.W.
Stephen Lang has been cast in Fangoria’s upcoming action horror film V.F.W. The 66-year-old actor is best known for portraying Colonel Miles Quaritch in James Cameron’s epic 2009 science fiction film Avatar, and will reprise his role in the upcoming sequels.
During the ‘80s and ‘90s, Fangoria was one of the most prominent horror publications. In 2017, however, the magazine essentially shut down, like so many other print outlets. The follow year, Fangoria was revived by the Dallas-based entertainment company Cinestate, with Phil Nobile Jr. hired as the new editor-in-chief. Last October, Fangoria released a new print issue and will continue to publish in quarterly installments moving forward. As for Lang, he won Fangoria’s Chainsaw Award for Best Supporting Actor for his 2016 performance in Don’t Breathe, in which he portrayed a villain known as The Blind Man.
Per Deadline, Lang has been cast in V.F.W, an action-horror film about a group of Vietnam veterans who defend their local Veterans of Foreign War post against a drug dealer and "punk mutants." The film's premise was inspired by The Wild Bunch and Night of the Living Dead, and will be produced by Fangoria, in collaboration with Brawl in Cell Block 99’s Dallas Sonnier. While Lang’s co-stars haven’t yet been announced, director Joe Begos will reportedly helm V.F.W, which was written by Max Brallier and Matthew McArdle. The aforementioned Nobile Jr. will serve as executive producer for Fangoria, along with Lang himself.
Last November, Cameron revealed that the Avatar sequels' leads had wrapped filming, which means that Lang’s visibility will significantly increase over the next several years. For his performance in the original 2009 film, Lang earned a Saturn Award for Best Supporting Actor and was nominated for two MTV Movie Awards, including Best Villain and Best Fight. In the past decade, however, Lang has kept a relatively low profile as a character actor. Aside from his film work, Lang is an accomplished stage performer and served as the Actor’s Studio co-artistic director from 2004 to 2006.
Given the popularity of the horror-centric streaming service Shudder, along with the mainstream success of horror-themed films, Fangoria’s revival marks another big step forward for the genre as a whole. For Stephen Lang, V.F.W. seems to represent the calm before the storm, as each Avatar sequel will be a "standalone movie" that aim to take over pop culture. Still, the Fangoria movie project is yet another significant career achievement for the celebrated actor.
