Amazon's Lord of the Rings Officially Casts British Actor Maxim Baldry
Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings show officially casts Maxim Baldry in a leading role. Penned by Tolkien, The Lord of the Rings is one of the best-selling novels of all time and spawned a slew of epic film adaptations helmed by Peter Jackson. Two years ago, Amazon shook the fantasy world when it ordered a Lord of the Rings TV series with a multi-season commitment. Despite production being underway, major details have been concealed about the upcoming fantasy series.
Set in a period long before the events of The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, the series takes place in the J.R.R. Tolkien timeline known as The Second Age. Lasting 3,441 years, marking the One Ring’s conception, and ending with the defeat of Sauron’s army, The Second Age of Lord of the Rings offers plentiful story arcs and fresh faces for the saga. Last year, Amazon announced its endeavor to produce 20 episodes for the first season and has already renewed Lord of the Rings for a sophomore season. The series has already fully stocked the cast list with Markella Kavenagh as Tyra, Joseph Mawle (Game of Thrones) as the main villain Oren, and Morfydd Clark as Galadriel. Now, the project has revealed who will tackle one of the leading roles.
As reported by Deadline, British actor Baldry joins The Lord of the Rings in an undisclosed leading role. Last fall, Baldry was in talks to join the esteemed cast, however, he was not on the Lord of the Rings original cast list. Best known for his role as Viktor Goraya in Years and Years, Baldry totes an impressive list of credits to his name. These include Rome, Doctor Who, and Last Christmas.
Having outbid Netflix for the rights, Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings could be the most expensive TV series of all time. Hailing from the writing duo of Patrick McKay and J.D. Payne, The Lord of the Rings series is in the creative hands of consultant Bryan Cogman (Game of Thrones), writer Gennifer Hutchinson (Breaking Bad), and J.A. Bayona (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), who’s been tapped to direct multiple episodes. Filming for the highly anticipated series is officially underway in New Zealand.
Baldry is the perfect addition to the cast and fantasy genre of the Lord of the Rings series. The talented actor translated thoughtfulness, wisdom, and intelligence to the screen, and will effortlessly fit into Tolkien’s world. Given the actor’s age, Baldry could fulfill the role of Baldor, a young Aragorn, or a brand new role entirely. Baldry and the other established players who round out the cast will do an impeccable job of bringing Amazon’s The Lord of the Rings series to life.
