Agatha Harness Spinoff Gets Retitle & Release Date Window
Development is moving swiftly on the WandaVision Agatha Harkness show as it gets a new title and a Winter 2023 release date. Kathryn Hahn made her Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in the Disney+ series as the titular heroes' nosey neighbor who seemingly knows more than she lets on. By the end of WandaVision, it was ultimately revealed that Agatha had manufactured many of the sinister events in the series and was investigating the Westview incident in the hopes of acquiring Wanda's powers.
The WandaVision spinoff series, which was first announced to be in development this past October, will see Kathryn Hahn reprising her role of the villainous witch while the original show's head writer Jac Schaeffer was reportedly set to return. The series would be confirmed to be in the works the following month, with Hahn having signed an overall deal with Marvel Studios to return in multiple projects and the show given the title Agatha: House of Harkness. Hahn and Marvel have kept their lips mostly sealed on the project, though now have an enticing update for fans of the character.
A few months after the show was revealed to be in development, Marvel Studios has revealed a new title for the WandaVision spinoff show at San Diego Comic-Con. The series, entitled Agatha: Coven of Chaos, has been set for a Winter 2023 release date on Disney+. The WandaVision spinoff's release date was included in the MCU's Phase 5 calendar, which also indicated that the series will pour over into 2024.
After playing the stereotypical nosey neighbor for the first few episodes of the show, audiences were enamored with Kathryn Hahn as Agatha in WandaVision, with those not being surprised at her villainous plot twist still praising the reveal and her performance. Anticipation has been high regarding her potential MCU return after Wanda reverted her back to her faux Agnes persona with her magic, leaving her seemingly trapped in Westview and arrested by S.W.O.R.D. Acclaim for Hahn's work in the role didn't stop at her performance as she earned a Primetime Emmy nomination for her performance and rave reviews for the song "Agatha All Along" written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, which itself scored an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Original Music and Lyrics.
The change of title for WandaVision's Agatha Harkness spinoff from House of Harkness to Coven of Chaos is sure to raise many eyebrows amongst MCU fans. The prior title seemed to indicate the possibilities of the show being set within Agatha's mind as she tries to escape Wanda's prison or an exploration of her familiar ties, though the latter could still be possible with the Coven of Chaos moniker, or hint at Agatha's ongoing hunt for stronger chaos magic to wield for herself. While audiences await further details on the spinoff, they can revisit Agatha's MCU debut with WandaVision streaming on Disney+ now.
