The 5 most anticipated movies opening in september
A REVIVAL OF AN '80S ACTION-HORROR CLASSIC AND THE LATEST ENTRY IN ANOTHER CONTEMOPRARY HORROR FRANCHISE TOP THE LIST FOR THIS MONTH, BUT A FEW SURPRISES LINGER BELOW THEM.
September 22 is officially the end of Summer and the beginning of Fall, and if you’re an avid follower of the Hollywood trends, you know what that means. This is traditionally the dead zone for the movie industry, when families are either taking last-minute vacations or sending their kids back to school. That said, there are still a few notable titles to keep an eye out for, including an update on an ’80s action-horror classic and the latest entry in another contemporary horror franchise. Read on to see what RT readers and our fans across social media have deemed worthy of their attention in September.
1. THE PREDATOR (2018)

Hollywood has been cashing in on 1980s nostalgia pretty hardcore for a while now, and the latest attempt to milk that cow comes from Fox. However, with improved technology and a cast that includes Olivia Munn, Keegan-Michael Key, and Sterling K. Brown, one can always hope that they’ve put something special together. It also doesn’t hurt that director and co-writer Shane Black not only co-starred in the original Predator, but has also built a pretty nice career behind the camera (see: Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, Iron Man 3, The Nice Guys). Fittingly, it was almost unanimously voted the most anticipated of the month on every platform.

The Conjuring appears to be the franchise that keeps on giving. Not content to produce two films of its own (with a third potentially on the way), it’s already spun off the Annabelle series, and we now get The Nun. This one takes the story back a little further in time to the 1950s, with a change of locale to Romania, where a Catholic priest (Demian Bichir) and a young novitiate (Taissa Farmiga, daughter of The Conjuring‘s Vera) are sent to investigate the mysterious suicide of a nun at a monastery. If the trailers and controversial marketing campaign are any indication, this one should help reinvigorate your healthy fear of the jump scare.

Jennifer Garner has certainly kicked her share of bad guy booty over the years, whether it was on TV’s Alias or on the big screen as Marvel’s first Elektra. Here, she stars in a more grounded — if no less ridiculous — take as a mother out for vigilante justice after her family is murdered and the system fails to punish the killers. It’s a pretty boilerplate template for a revenge film, but it was enticing enough to take third in our Facebook and Twitter polls, and fifth in our Instagram poll.
4. WHITE BOY RICK (2018)

In all honesty, it was a bit of a toss-up after the top three spots, but indie films deserve some love, too. Matthew McConaughey and Richie Merritt star in this based-on-true-events story about a teenager who became a police informant during the 1980s, only to be later abandoned and left to rot in prison. It just premiered at Telluride and it’s gotten mixed reviews, but it’s still too early to tell, and it shot up to #3 in our Instagram poll and #5 in our Twitter poll.
5. THE OLD MAN & THE GUN (2018)

Another true story makes its way to theaters this month, and this one stars Robert Redford, Casey Affleck, and Sissy Spacek. This drama follows Forrest Tucker, the 70-year-old who escaped from San Quentin and perpetrated a series of heists that fascinated the public. Director David Lowery (Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, A Ghost Story) has worked with Affleck before, with fantastic results, and it’s reportedly Redford’s final role, so the fourth place ranking in our Twitter and Facebook polls seems pretty reasonable. This one also just premiered at Telluride, and initial reviews say it’s a worthy sendoff.
