13 DC Projects Coming In 2019 (And 12 We Have To Wait For)

While Marvel always seems to be providing constant entertainment on both television and movie sceens worldwide, DC's not as far behind as you may think. With the new DC Universe streaming service now providing additional streaming content to accompany the Arrowverse shows and the DCEU, there's never been so much fresh content for fans of the brand.

While there are only two DCEU films coming in 2019, there are far more projects than you think coming on the way in future years or in early stages of production. Whether they're DC Universe exclusive shows like Doom Patrol, DCEU tentpoles like Wonder Woman 1984, animated movies like Reign of the Supermen, or returning favorites like Young Justice: Outsiders, there's something for every DC fan on the horizon. With the likes of Daredevil and the other Netflix Marvel shows going by the wayside as Disney ramps up to the launch of its own streaming service, comic fans could use some more quality comic book-inspired content, particularly on the more mature side, which has become an under-represented market these days.

Then there are those movies and shows that lie beyond the wall of 2019, which also deserve recognition. DC is bring us the Rock-starring Black Adam, the Harley Quinn-headlined Birds of Prey film, and so many more. Do not make a mistake of underestimating Warner Bros. and DC as all of these projects do indicate an impressive, content-filled future for DC-branded films and shows.

25. 2019: SHAZAM!

While Shazam used to have the same level of name recognition as Superman decades ago, he's become something of a forgotten gem. Now that DC seems intent on trying to expand its universe with more "obscure" characters, Shazam can establish himself again as one of DC's most popular heroes.

Shazam! stars Asher Angel/Zachary Levi as Billy Batson, a young man who after coming into contact with a magical wizard that grants him the ability to become a super-powered hero if he simply says the magic word: Shazam! Expect lots of laughs and plenty of heart when Shazam! comes out on April 5th.

24. WAIT: WONDER WOMAN 1984

While the anticipated sequel to the much-beloved Wonder Woman has been shoved all the way to mid-2020, that doesn't mean fans can't get excited with some story details. Set during the Cold War, Diana is conflicting with the Soviet Union while also combating a new capable opponent in a villainous presence named Cheetah.

The sequel's setting seems perfect during this time where '80s-related media is seemingly even hotter than they were during the 1980s themselves. Add in the potential for social commentary about the modern age, an apparent resurrection of Steve Trevor, and you've got a compelling sequel on your hands. Wonder Woman 1984 comes out June 5th, 2020.

23. 2019: JOKER

The Clown Prince of Crime is, at last, receiving the solo movie treatment. Todd Phillips (The Hangover series, War Dogs) is directing what appears to be an extremely twisted, '70s-inspired film about a failed comedian who decides to take a drastically new direction with his life.

Starring Academy Award nominee Joaquin Phoenix, Zazie Beetz, and Robert De Niro, Joker plans on redefining everyone's favorite psychotic clown in more ways than one. With on-set photos depicting a chaotic experience and the promised R-rating, you can expect this film to remind audiences why they love this character in all his wicked glory. Joker comes out October 4th, 2019.

22. WAIT: BIRDS OF PREY (AND THE FANTABULOUS EMANCIPATION OF ONE HARLEY QUINN)

This Harley Quinn spinoff may have a brand new name and a whole lot of exciting components. What's to get excited about? How does Black Canary (Jurnee Smollett-Bell), Huntress (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), and Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) teaming up to take on Ewan McGregor's Black Mask in a violent, R-rated explosion of personality for two hours sound?

While Joker vs. Harley Quinn and Gotham City Sirens also involve Quinn, it seems this film will really be her standout moment. Director Cathy Yan and Bumblebee screenwriter Christina Hodson are prepped to provide an action movie that hasn't been seen within any other comic book movie. It certainly goes beyond just being a Suicide Squad spinoff. Birds of Prey comes out February 7th, 2020.

21. 2019: DOOM PATROL

If you've been keeping up with DC's Titans series, you have already been introduced to the Doom Patrol. Robotman, Elasti-Woman, Negative Man, and other fresh faces will be gathered for an all-important mission given to them by Cyborg. Looking to be a mix of X-Men and Suicide Squad, Doom Patrol will be unlike any series preceding it. Extremely personable characters, each with their own personal struggles and quirks, make up one odd, loving family.

Starring Matt Bomer, Brendan Frasier, April Bowlby and James Bond himself Timothy Dalton, Doom Patrol warrants your attention. The new series is expected to premiere around in 2019 on the DC Universe service.

20. WAIT: SUICIDE SQUAD 2

Even with the Joker and Harley Quinn movies on the way, there's still Suicide Squad 2 barrelling toward us. Currently back in the development process since Birds of Prey "borrowed" many of Suicide Squad 2's original script ideas, the sequel is reportedly being reimagined by creative behind Guardians of the Galaxy: James Gunn.

With the marketing for Suicide Squad being compared to Gunn's Guardians of the Galaxy, he seems like a great candidate for the job. It's unclear which members of the Squad will return and which ones will be replaced, but definitely expect big changes. Suicide Squad 2's release is TBA.

19. 2019: SWAMP THING

The Swampy Green Giant is finally getting his own series, and it's coming to the DC Universe app soon. From producer James Wan (director of Aquaman and The Conjuring films) comes a live-action interpretation of Alec Holland and his transformation from a normal man to something far more. After coming into contact with a swamp-borne virus, he is presumed deceased-- but is he?

Included with this tale of bayou mysticism are a mix of horrific sights, heroism, fantasy, and even some beauty. Holland will struggle with his attempts to retain his humanity as he becomes something quite monstrous. Swamp Thing is due for release approximately between late May-August of next year on the DCU app.

18. WAIT: CYBORG

With this character's appearance in Justice League and strong fan base thanks to the Teen Titans series, you'd expect a standalone to be confirmed by now, right? Cyborg has been pushed back to mid-2020.

Even if you think he doesn't need one, it's been "implied" that his cut Justice League scenes were removed so they could be utilized in a Cyborg movie. There's a significant amount of Victor Stone's story that has yet to be told, and it deserves to be shared. Cyborg is slated for release April 3rd, 2020.

17. 2019: YOUNG JUSTICE: OUTSIDERS

At long last, Young Justice lives again. Five years and one cancellation later, the series is back with Young Justice: Outsiders. Serving as the third season of the series, Outsiders involves two superhero teams (The Team and The Outsiders) as they attempt to disrupt metahuman trafficking as a result of events from the previous season.

All of the original cast members are returning to play their characters and it looks like the stakes have never been higher with Darkseid not too far from the action. Young Justice Outsiders will premiere January 4th on DC Universe.

16. WAIT: THE FLASH

Back to characters who are missing chunks of their story, where's Barry Allen's movie? The Flash has gone through a series of creative shifts and departures but has seemingly found its leaders in John Francis Daley and Johnathan Goldstein (Game Night).

The project was initially rebranded to be Flashpoint, but there isn't much known about the story at the moment. The pair promised a movie similar in tone to the Back to the Future movies. The Flash is scheduled to begin production late 2019.

15. 2019: STARGIRL

With all current DC comic book movies and shows centering on adults dealing with the troubles of superheroism, it's time that they show a high schooler taking on this struggle. Stargirl sees high school sophomore Courtney Whitmore inspire those around her to form a crime-fighting squad that would eventually become the Justice Society of America.

The series is being handled by Geoff Johns, the original creator of the character. With the all-too-familiar structure of shows on the Arrowverse, Stargirl should provide fans something much different in both tone and structure. Stargirl is expected to come out September/October on DC Universe.

14. WAIT: THE BATMAN

Initially a Batman-certified solo film with Ben Affleck set to direct, write, and star in the movie, things have changed tremendously following his stepping down. Matt Reeves (Cloverfield, Planet of the Apes series) now serves as director and screenwriter.

It's currently unclear what direction Reeves will take with the film. Rumors have stated it could be a prequel or it could be a standalone set after the events of Justice League. Affleck's status with the film has been questioned, but until proven otherwise, he's still set to star. The Batman's release date is TBA.

13. 2019: HARLEY QUINN

If you thought Harley Quinn's popularity was already at its peak, you haven't seen anything yet. Before her announced live-action movies, there's the Harley Quinn show. Voiced by The Big Bang Theory's Kaley Cuoco, HQ involves Harley and her best friend Poison Ivy as they go on many different, wildly violent adventures.

Bolstering a greatly talented cast and pitch-perfect animation, this show intends to prove why fans love this Ms. Quinzel so much. With (according to Harley herself) gratuitous violence and plenty of curse words bleeped, this should be a very different animated show than fans are used to. Harley Quinn is expected to debut mid-October on DC Universe.

12. WAIT: GREEN LANTERN CORPS.

The Ryan Reynolds-starring Green Lantern film from 2011 may still be fresh in people's minds, but Green Lantern Corps. sounds like a project determined to bring respect back to the Lantern name. Described as "Lethal Weapon in space" by Warner Bros., the film will feature Hal Jordan and John Stewart as the main characters.

Green Lantern Corps. was originally written by David S. Goyer (Batman Begins, Man of Steel), but has since added on Geoff Johns to rewrite the script. With Johns' expertise on Green Lantern, having written one of the character's best outings back in 2015, things sound promising for the project. Green Lantern Corps. is scheduled to release July 24th, 2020.

11. 2019: GOTHAM SEASON 5

The wild, boldly unpredictable series set in pre-Batman Gotham city is drawing to a close with its fifth season in 2019. Even after less-than-stellar ratings, Fox gave the show an opportunity to finish off its long-developing origin story. Expect proceedings to be chaotic, villain-filled, and uncompromisingly-odd.

Villains like Bane, Harley Quinn (at least a version of her), and more are expected to enter the chaos too, adding their own craziness to the show. A grand finale is surely on the table for this series when Gotham's fifth season debuts January 3rd on Fox.

10. WAIT: BLACK ADAM

Considering Dwayne Johnson's ability to be all over Hollywood, it's incredible that he hasn't appeared in a comic book movie. Black Adam is a film that will remedy this fact. Initially slated to star in David F. Sandberg's Shazam!, WB elected to separate the two, allowing for the character to be better developed. This way, the character's downward spiral into villainy could be properly captured.

Plot-wise, Black Adam will see the titular character attempt to fight his way out of slavery in Khandaq. The film's tone is expected to be gritty like the source material and will apparently involve several DC heroes. Black Adam's production is set for late 2019.

9. 2019: KRYPTON SEASON 2

Krypton debuted its first season this year and earned a renewal by Syfy. The show takes place 200 years before the birth of Superman and involves Seg-El, the grandfather of Kal-El, as he attempts to earn redemption for his family name and maintain Krypton's safety so that Superman may one day live.

Much like Gotham, the show deploys recognizable villains like General Zod and Brainiac to keep things interesting, with season 2's inclusion of Lobo only raising the stakes further. Superman fans can easily have a blast with this series. Krypton season 2 will debut some time in 2019 on Syfy.

8. WAIT: BATGIRL

With Batman on the big screen and both Nightwing and Batwoman on TV, the Bat-family has been spreading across the DC brand. Batgirl would only end up increasing that spread, and many fans would be happy to see it.

Regardless of which version of the character is used, Batgirl is a character with rich history across each of its interpretations. Originally set to be directed and written by Joss Whedon, but he departed the project in February 2018. There's no one in the directing chair at the moment, but Christina Hodson (Remember her? She's writing Birds of Prey!) will be the screenwriter. Batgirl's production start is TBA.

7. 2019: WONDER WOMAN: BLOODLINES

DC Animation brings Diana Prince back to the spotlight for the first time since 2009 with Wonder Woman: Bloodlines. Although the long delay between standalone Wonder Woman animated movies was a result of low initial sales, the character's success in live-action has earned her another shot.

Little information is known about Bloodlines, but you can expect DC to unveil more when its animated films begin releasing next year. The film comes at a good time as Wonder Woman fans have to wait until 2020 for Wonder Woman 1984. Bloodlines can help keep the hype train chugging along until then. Wonder Woman: Bloodlines comes out sometime in 2019 to DVD, Blu-ray, and On-Demand.

6. WAIT: BOOSTER GOLD/BLUE BEETLE

Although there have been rumors of two separate Blue Beetle movies (one with Ted Kord and the other with Jaime Reyes), it seems there's only one with an actual script. The finished script, written by Zack Stentz (X-Men First Class, Thor) also happens to involve a certain friend of Blue Beetle's, Booster Gold. The recently Jamie Reyes vehicle has Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer on board as screenwriter.

Stentz's would be primarily centered around Booster Gold, but the two would frequently be together. Stentz has stated on his Twitter account that he's done with the script, but it still needs to get the confirmation from WB. Booster Gold/Blue Beetle's production is TBA, as is Blue Beetle's.

5. 2019: BATMAN: HUSH

In Batman Hush, Bruce Wayne fights against his worst enemy: himself. Okay, it's not literally himself, but rather someone who takes his identity and pretends to be him, forcing the real Bruce Wayne to take action.

Hush is an animated adaptation of the classic Batman comic by Jeph Loeb. Batman will face off against Poison Ivy, Ra's al Ghul, The Joker, and the titular villain Hush. If you've never read the original graphic novel, check Hush out. It's worth it just to see one of Batman's most memorable stories-- and one of his most underrated villains.

4. WAIT: LOBO

The alien bounty hunter Lobo is apparently getting the big-screen treatment. While he's making his live-action debut on Krypton, the screenplay for his film is currently being reworked by Jason Fuchs to allow for a less-demanding production budget.

In development since 2009, Lobo has gone through some changes, initially having Guy Ritchie and Brad Peyton as directors. They didn't pan out, but in February 2018, WB began courting Bay for the job, which may not work out either. Lobo's production start is TBA.

3. 2019: REIGN OF THE SUPERMEN

A continuation of 2017's The Death of Superman, Reign of the Supermen sees Metropolis and the rest of the world react to Superman's passing. With Supes out of the picture, multiple different versions of the hero appear, eager to take up his mantle.

Coming from the same team as TDoS, Reign is a project that should live up to the quality of its predecessor, particularly with an excellent cast filling out the voice cast. Reign of the Supermen comes out January 29th, on DVD, Blu-ray, and On-Demand.

2. WAIT: NEW GODS

Few would expect the director of Selma to be the one leading a New Gods film, but Ava DuVernay's passion for the characters makes her a great choice. After all, she's the one who pitched the movie to DC Films. Fans got a glimpse of them during Justice League's "Who's that Steppenwolf guy?" sequence, and this film would greatly expand on that setup.

The film is in early development as it searches for a screenwriter, but DuVernay apparently intends to adapt Jack Kirby's 1984-85 run of the series. Few other details are available on the project, but don't sleep on it quite yet. It could be something really special. New Gods' production date is TBA.

1. 2019: WATCHMEN

A decade after Zack Snyder's big screen adaptation comes HBO's Watchmen TV series. With showrunner Damon Lindelof (Lost, The Leftovers), a score from Atticus Ross and Trent Reznor, and a cast including Regina King, Jean Smart, and Jeremy Irons, the series clearly has a pedigree-- now we just need to figure out what it's about!

Though Jeremy Irons is reportedly playing iconic Watchmen character Ozymandias, the series is rumored to be set decades after the time period of the original story.
