A little history of what happened and what to expect:
------
For those of you who have been in hiding, on oil rigs, in prison or comatose for the last 6 months, and have no idea what we're talking about, read on....
Catastrophe
On the 27th September, 2012 - an electrical surge caused our primary hardware to fail in a bad way. To cut a very long story short, all the logical disks inside our RAID 5 array failed. We had backups, but the backups were stored on the same array. Clearly, our absent disaster recovery scenario had reared its ugly head and said "Remember me? You forgot to implement me!"
We lost everything. TDv2 as we knew it died a terrible death, and took everything with it. Users. Forums. Torrents. Rules. Knowledgebase.
EVERYTHING
The site owner, filled with grief and anguish made the decision then that we would use this opportunity to implement TDv3 - the long awaited refresh of the current site. TDv3 - some might remember - had been talked about for a long time, and although two projects had been started to implement it, it never really went anywhere. The reason for this was that TDv2 was already so successful - how could one improve on it? There was no motivation for us. This was the motivation we needed.
We set the target for 30 days.
Unrealistic
What our site owner forgot is that he and the other Sysop (me) had full time jobs. 30 days might have been achievable if like TDv2 we just re-themed Gazelle, but no, that was not our goal. Our goal was to take TD further into the future - further forward, to take it to new heights. The goal was to templateify the site. My spell checker is going nuts now, all these strange words. Most people know that when you create web sites, you pretty much make php output what you want it to output. TD no longer does this! Combining PHP with a templating technology known as "Smarty", we build sites. Each page is calculated, and then sent through the templating engine to give you what you see as HTML code.
Why did we do this? Many reasons really, but the main benefits are:
Easier to modify layouts in future
Ability to add language support
Ability to add different templates for themeing support
Speed. Cache SQL queries, template it, cache the results, give to people Each page is loading in less than 1 second.
We're already starting to see these benefits.
As I said though, doing all of this in 30 days was unrealistic for people who have full time jobs.
Rebirth
TDv3 has for the last two months had a working framework which has been built upon, improved, bug tested by a team of dedicated people, to bring it where it is today.
So here we are - live and running, but there are so many more questions which remain unanswered, so this post is hopefully going to answer them.
Where's my %variable%
Lost Ratio? VIP Status? MVP status? Donor Status? The answer is yes - to all of the above. Earlier on in this post I said we lost everything - I wasn't exaggerating. Hard decisions have had to be made, and while they won't be popular, they were made for the fairness to all of our members. These decisions include:
NO RATIO WILL BE RECOVERED
Everybody will start off with a credit of 5 GB. We will not be restoring anybody's ratio, no matter how many screenshots they can show us of them having terabytes worth of upload credit. Why? This wouldn't be fair on people who have not taken such screenshots.
ALL VIP'S HAVE TO RE-EARN VIP STATUS
With the exception of ex-staff (moderator or higher), VIP statuses will have to be re-earned. We're sorry about this, we know that a lot of people have spent considerable time contributing to the community but we just can't remember all of you. We have no written record of your accomplishments, and it would not be fair on those who we've forgotten versus the people who we remember. Ex-staff is a different story because there's enough of us to remember all of them, but when it comes to ex-uploaders, ex-FLS and VIP's for other reasons, we just can't remember them all.
DONOR STATUS WILL BE RECOVERED
In due time. Our highest priority is to get the site fully functional and working, but we do have intentions to replay all donations received into the database when it is possible to do so. The only thing is, that when this happens, and a donation comes from an e-mail which is not recognised, then this donation will not go onto the appropriate account. For example, if you signed up with one e-mail address and your Paypal address is different, then you will not get credited for this donation.
Freeleech / Ratio Build not yet available
While we did promise Ratio Building as compensation when the new site went live, this is not something we've been able to deliver due to technical reasons. The tracker does not have the code to allow modifications of the values before inserting it into the database, so this has to be written in. It's something we're working on getting ready.
