Brazil pay-TV industry estimates losses to piracy at BRL 6 billion

Three million Brazilian households have clandestine access to pay-TV, generating annual losses of BRL 6 billion in revenue for the sector. The figures were published by the Brazilian Pay Television Association (ABTA), during a seminar organised by daily O Globo, in partnership with Extra, Valor and Epoca. According to ABTA consultant Antonio Salles Neto, 50 percent of internet users access sites with illegal content, mainly pirated movies and TV series. For his part, Ancine adviser Mozart Tenorio pointed out that the research shows that people accessing illegal content would not necessarily pay for such services if they did not have the pirate version.
