µTorrent Pro Tips: µTorrent For Your Console

Torrents aren’t just for computers. Gaming and mobile consoles can actually run torrent media files, provided that they are converted to the proper video codec supported by the device. µtorrent Pro, available now for Windows, converts media files to be played on your gaming console. This makes it easy to play HD video or music through your device — and on the big screen.
But first, a few caveats. As mentioned previously, console conversion can only happen with µtorrent Pro. Second, the files can only be media — audio and video — not games or applications. Finally, µtorrent can properly convert codecs, but it won’t upgrade them: you should consider the resolution of your file and make the choice about whether it will look good on the big screen.
In order to transfer a file, like the new FilmBuff Bundle, you must convert it to your device of choice and then load the file onto an available USB stick. µtorrent allows users to “add devices,” which operates as a neat drag-and-drop shortcut for codec conversion. The loaded file can also be converted by right-clicking the “Torrents” tab, and selecting “Convert For…” Then, once the file is done converting, simply plug in a USB stick, select “Transfer files to storage” and transfer the file over. Put that USB stick in your console of choice and enjoy.
While µtorrent Pro is able to neatly convert for these consoles, there are a few things to keep in mind to ensure the process runs smoothly. Be mindful of the codec used to compress the audio or video file – stick with MPEG4 or H.264 files for videos, which can be the most challenging to convert. Currently, µtorrent Pro fully supports Xbox 360 and PlayStation3, so conversion to newer consoles may present more of a challenge. This will be changed in an update later.
