How to Cross-Seed Torrents

1. The first thing you must do, is download in full the torrent and the contents you want to seed here from another site.

You MUST make sure that they are the same name, same size and same format as the torrent listed here otherwise you will not be able to see and may end up downloading the torrent instead

2 . Once you have downloaded the torrent from the other site, locate where you downloaded this file.
You can find the location of YOUR downloaded torrent by right clicking on the torrent in uTorrent and clicking "Open File Location"
Copy that location and then you can proceed to step 2.


3. Then, browse in torrents search bar for the SAME torrent
- Make sure you ONLY download the .torrent file otherwise you will end up downloading the same thing twice and will therefore not cross-seed.
Browse for the same torrent you have and click on it.

Open it with your client of choice - in this case uTorrent but DO NOT click OK yet!


4. Once you have clicked the torrent file you will see this screen :

Untick Start Torrent because if you have not set this up correctly, you will end up downloading twice!
(You CAN leave Start Torrent ticked if you are 100% certain you have the correct path for the existing files)
Click OK.

5. Once you have clicked ok, right click on the torrent and click "Force Recheck"

This will now cause the torrent status to turn to "checking"


6. Once the Torrent has reached 100% checked, right click the torrent again and click Force Start


The torrent should now start seeding and you can enjoy the benefits of cross-seeding it.

Is this allowed on all trackers, or are forbidden in some ???

You can cross seed with any tracker; however, you should always check the rules of your tracker. I'm not aware of any that say it is not allowed, but you should still check.

Some trackers do not like you to share their content outside of their site, with those I would advise not to cross seed, assuming their content has "leaked" onto other trackers.

when I do this it seems to download the torrent if it is not a match. It used to work for me. What am I doing wrong "i tick dont start download"

Mines is rutorrent

**fixed you cant drag and drop the files even if you have don't auto start. And you need the directories picked

anyone ever use the setting "do not add torrents name to path" for cross seeding? I ask because something lead to my box erasing the whole "seed box hardrive" in the past. Not sure what I did lol but it deleted TB'S

Is there a guide out there for the easiest way to overcome the issue of a torrent being exactly the same but having a slightly different filename? For instance, I have a completed torrent from tracker A and the torrent is also available on tracker B (same files, same file size, etc...). When I download the new torrent from tacker B into ruTorrent, the name is almost the same, except tracker B added ".mkv" on the end. Therefore, when I force recheck, it sits at zero.

I have seen other posts about doing things such as creating a "hardlink" but it seems fairly complicated and I am using a seedbox so I don't "think" I have access to the shell or command prompt required to do those tasks. I could be wrong about that though.

It seems like it should be easier to just tell the torrent client that "the files you need to seed this are right here....don't worry about the naming convention" but perhaps not.

@CertainlyNot There's two types of torrents: torrents with a single file and torrents with a root folder with files inside. For the latter case there is a "torrent name", which is the one showing up in your torrents list, and a "torrent root folder name". Now, it doesn't matter what the "torrent name" is, what matters is the "torrent root folder name" is exactly the same as the one from the torrent you already have. Finally, in addition to this, most clients give the option to not put the files inside a subfolder (which is the same as the "torrent root folder name" we talked about), which can turn out useful.

This said, the usual way to go here would be to rename your "torrent root folder name" while you're in the import torrent dialog of your client (qBittorrent lets you do this simply) so that it matches the folder name you already own. All in all you just have to play with these things in order to make your client download the files in the exact same location, nothing more. :)

Thanks. I've been trying various things in that manner and still can't get it to work. For instance, here is a screen shot of my add torrent screen. I have tried making sure the directory is the same one as the completed file and then adding the torrent, etc...nothing seems to work. I'm probably missing something stupid.

Would it matter if the torrent from Tracker A was multiple RAR files and the torrent from Tracker B was a single media file? I haven't confirmed that is the case yet but I would imagine that would cause issues.
