MOSCOW, March 21 (Itar-Tass) - RIA Novosti. The US authorities oppose the Nord Stream-2 energy project, State Department spokesman Heather Nauert said.

According to her, "Nord Stream-2" undermines the energy security and stability of Europe.

"We, as the US government, are against Nord Stream 2. We believe that the project will undermine the overall energy security and stability of Europe and will provide Russia with another means to exert pressure on European countries, especially on such as Ukraine" , - stressed Nauert during a briefing for journalists.

The representative of the diplomatic department also said that the US can impose sanctions against companies working on the construction of the gas pipeline.

"The State Department spent a lot of time negotiating with partners and allies overseas to explain to them the consequences of CAATSA.The companies operating in the Russian energy pipeline sector may be subject to restrictive measures," Naouert said.

US President Donald Trump signed in the summer of 2017 the law "On Countering America's Enemies through Sanctions" (CAATSA) against Russia, Iran and the DPRK. Implementation of the law began in late January 2018.

The Nord Stream-2 project involves the construction of two strings of a gas pipeline from the Russian coast to Germany via the Baltic Sea. The total cost of the project is estimated at almost ten billion euros.
