NASA's Perseverance Rover Poses In Spooky Mars Photo
Mars is a truly beautiful planet, but this latest NASA Perseverance photo reminds us it can also be rather spooky. Compared to life on Earth, Mars is dramatically different. It doesn't have any known life, is extremely cold, and its environment primarily consists of rocks and dust. Some folks might look at it as a bleak planet and call it a day, but numerous photos from NASA's rovers have proved otherwise.
At this very moment, multiple robots are exploring Mars to help scientists and astronomers better understand the planet. Whether it be Curiosity, Perseverance, or Ingenuity, these robots are critical for Martian exploration. They also happen to be great photographers. These robots regularly capture and share pictures from their adventures on Mars, allowing everyone on Earth to get up close and personal with the neighboring planet. Many of these photos are quite stunning. From pictures of vast landscapes to playful rocks, there's a lot of beauty to be found there.
As with any alien planet, however, Mars can also be rather scary. After a two-week hiatus thanks to the solar conjunction, Perseverance recently came back online and shared a new batch of photos. NASA acquired the above photo on October 22, 2021, via Perseverance's Right Navigation Camera. The picture really speaks for itself. Perseverance is seen posing towards the right, with the rest of the scene revealing a dark Martian landscape. There are rocks everywhere you look, brown dirt underneath them, and an eerie gray sky in the background. We may need horror movies to get in the spooky mood here on Earth, but with sights like this on Mars, those aren't a necessity.
Other Creepy Mars Photos Worth Seeing
Want to keep the creepy mood going? The good news is that this isn't the only haunting Mars photo NASA's captured. Back in September, Perseverance snapped the above shot of a haunting Martian sunrise. The sun blasts a mysterious green glow throughout the sky, while the rocks below appear pitch black in its lighting. The Curiosity rover also shared a spooky picture earlier this month. That one offered an incredible look at two mountains on the planet set against a completely black sky.
This is why Mars has proven so unbelievably fascinating. In one picture, the planet looks like a calm and peaceful destination that'd be a joy to visit. In others, it looks like something ripped straight out of a horror movie. It's unlikely any of us will ever be able to see these things with our own eyes, but given how spine-chilling Mars can be, maybe that's a good thing.
