LG Slashes 55-Inch Curved OLED TV Price

Stop hunting for change in the couch cushions, and put down the kids' piggy banks: LG today announced a big price cut for its massive curved-screen TV.
The EA9800 55-inch OLED HDTV launched in the U.S. in July with a $14,999 price tag. But starting today, shoppers can pick one up for only $8,000. Add on LG's $1,000 instant rebate for U.S. consumers, and the television is a relative bargain at $7,000.
"Razor thin OLED TVs, with their amazing color and contrast ratios, represent the first major change in TV display technology since the rise of LCD/LED large-screen HDTVs," CEO William Cho said in a statement. "Our goal is to grow the U.S. OLED TV market by making OLED TVs more affordable. And this is another step in that direction."
Initially, the EA9800 sold exclusively at Magnolia stores inside Best Buy, launching at the retailer's flagship Richfield, Minn. store before rolling out to select cities across the country before hitting shelves nationwide.

Standing at just 0.17 inches thin (or 4.3 millimeters), the TV set weighs less than 38 pounds. Yet it still produces intensely clear, realistic images via LG's four-color pixel system, which features a white sub-pixel compatible with the traditional, red, green, and blue.
Slap the set onto your living room wall, or prop it up on your bedroom dresser for what LG called an "IMAX-like" viewing experience. What's more, the company claims it is the world's first to achieve THX Display Certification, meaning the smart TV passed hundreds of lab tests and promises to deliver the best picture quality of a professional display.
The 55-inch television also boasts support for gesture controls and 3D capabilities; speakers are embedded in the clear stand.
If you're in the market to fill an even bigger bit of wall space, LG also offers a 77-inch HDTV, with a resolution of 3,840-by-2,160 on a curved OLED display. Pricing and availability has not yet been announced.
