'The Goondiwindi Whopper’ weighs in at 5.43kg after 40-hour labour

CONNOR “the Goondiwindi Whopper”, who came into the world on the weekend, has been well worth the weight.

Born in Toowoomba Hospital at 11.38am on Saturday, he weighed an impressive 5.43kg (12 pounds).

His Goondiwindi parents, who asked not to be identified, are relieved to finally meet their big boy.

“She was in labour for just over 40 hours before the C-section,” Connor’s father said.

“We had been told he had a long body and that he could be big but that it could also be fluid, so we didn’t know.”

Asked what his reaction was when he saw the size of his son, he said: “I don’t know if you can print that, but I was extremely surprised.

“He was 57cm in length and had a head circumference of 40.2cm.

“You look at him beside the other average-sized babies and you just go, ‘Wow’.”

And Connor already has quite an appetite.


“He can drink 40ml of milk,” his mother said.

“We’ve had to buy bigger nappies as the ones we had were too small.”

Apparently Connor also has a strong, loud voice.

“He’s got a good set of lungs on him,” his mother said. “You can hear him above the other babies.”

Connor’s father heaped praise on Toowoomba Hospital staff who helped with the birth of the couple’s first child.

“We couldn’t have asked for anything more of the staff,” he said. “They looked after bub, they looked after mum, and at times they looked after me.”

Last year, a Victorian woman gave birth to a 6.06kg (13.5 pound) boy, who was believed to be Australia’s biggest baby.

That record was surpassed in February by Maoama Ala, who tipped the scales at 6.3kg (13.9 pounds).
