‘Drink spike’ attempt sparks outrage

A FESTIVAL-GOER has unwittingly filmed the sinister moment a man seemingly attempts to spike her drink.

Kristal Santos was dancing among a packed crowd during Easter at a party in Escarpas do Lago in Brazil when she decided to film herself and a friend, The Sun reported.

Just seconds into the short clip, a man wearing a black t-shirt, sunglasses and a baseball cap snuck up behind the pair and dropped something – as yet unidentified – into Ms Santos’ cup before walking off.

The video, uploaded to Twitter on April 4, has been viewed more than 10.6 million times and shared by close to 97,000 users.

Social media commenters voiced their outrage and urged women to be vigilant with their drinks.

“Whether this is set up or not, it should be a lesson to everyone to be more vigilant and aware of your surroundings when partying with friends. This does happen to men and/or women.. Be alert. Be Smart.”, Twitter user @LaCraftyP commented, while @damian0706 said “That is absolutely disgraceful, that man should be identified and shamed”.

In a lengthy Instragram post, originally written in Spanish, Ms Santos thanked the public for their support and confirmed she and her friend were unharmed by the incident.

“I thank everyone at heart for the messages of concern,” she said.

“Once again I will explain here to those who are still worried… I did not drink anything from that cup because it was the end of the party and the glass was already empty.

“Nothing happened to me. Yes I’m glad the video is resonating in a positive way, as an alert for everyone to take more care of their glasses, including me.

“I bet just like my mother, the mother of everyone has warned a thousand times to take care of their glasses, I thought she exaggerated!

“But the truth is it can happen anytime and anywhere.”
