File-Shack closing down after a few weeks of existance

Hello All

I recently joined File-Shack (They promoted announced free signups) just to learn a few days later, that it will be closing down now due to personal issues on owner's side.

I am new to private trackers and tried to build up ratio there. Didn't have much time and peers for that now...

However I read about scam trackers which collect IP addresses and other info. Now I am a bit worried this might be the case.

My question to the more experienced:
- Are such "scam trackers" still a thing?
- What do they do with the information they can collect?
- How do you protect yourself? Only connect using VPN? (if it is a low low tier tracker, I know some trackers do not like that - but the big ones are trustworthy of course.)

it wasnt a scam site i was on there i know the owner from other sites
at the moument he is having health issues which he is trying to sort out
when he has that sorted he said he might open up if that happens everyone will get an email
