Tomb Raider Reloaded Is A Free-To-Play Mobile Game Coming Next Year
Attachment 45277
Square Enix has officially announced a new Tomb Raider mobile game that’s set to release next year. The last major game in the series, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, was released two years ago, although a Definitive Edition was released last year which included the base game, all seven of the released DLC expansions, a new outfit for Lara Croft, and a few gameplay adjustments.
The Tomb Raider franchise isn’t exactly a newcomer to mobile platforms as Lara Croft Go was released back in 2015. The turn-based puzzle game was based on the mechanics of 2014’s Hitman Go and both were received rather positively. Hitman is another long-running series that’s releasing a new entry next year with Hitman 3, which will be coming to PC and consoles in January 2021. Those interested in playing Hitman 3 on PC will have to purchase it via the Epic Games Store, though, as it was announced as an exclusive on the platform a few months ago.
As for the new Tomb Raider mobile game, Square Enix released a teaser trailer for the new title, which will be called Tomb Raider Reloaded, that doesn’t really show any gameplay but does give us a hint at what the visuals of the game will look like. Instead of the high visual fidelity and effects quality of Shadow of the Tomb Raider, it seems the new mobile title will feature stylized graphics that is somewhat expected of a mobile game. The trailer also shows off some of the enemies Lara, who is shown sporting her classic shorts and tank top, will be facing, which include wolves, giant spiders, a golem, and a T-Rex.
The visuals and enemies featured in the trailer, especially the T-Rex, reveal that Tomb Raider Reloaded is a return to the game’s lighter and more fantastical roots as opposed to the darker and grittier tone of Shadow of the Tomb Raider and its predecessors. According to Square Enix, the new game is a free-to-play action arcade game and is being developed by Emerald City Games and published by Square Enix London Mobile. Emerald City Games also works on G.I. Joe: War On Cobra, a mobile game based on the G.I. Joe franchise that released earlier this year.
While it’s unclear just exactly how Tomb Raider Reloaded will be gameplay-wise, it’s still great to see that Square Enix is bringing back the more fun and lighthearted tone of the series after the conclusion of the franchise’s origin trilogy of games with Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
