Samsung Galaxy S10 processor to arrive with dedicated NPU
Over the past twelve months, both chip makers and smartphone brands have focused heavily on new artificial intelligence implementations – Huawei’s Kirin 980 actually boasts two dedicated NPUs in the hope of improving AI performance. Samsung, on the other hand, has largely avoided any implementations of this kind. But with the arrival of the Galaxy S10, this could change.
According to the LinkedIn profile of a former Samsung employee, the company began developing its second-generation NPU design in December of 2017. From the looks of things, the employee in question left the project halfway through, so very little information about the solution is provided. However, considering work begun almost a year ago, the new design will presumably be ready in time for the arrival of the Galaxy S10.
Unsurprisingly, it seems Samsung already developed its own NPU prior to beginning work on the second-generation version. However, this never made an appearance inside the company’s smartphones which would suggest it wasn’t happy with the end result. Obviously, there is no guarantee that a similar scenario will not occur with the second-generation NPU. But this time around, the company will face increased pressure to integrate one, which means its highly unlikely to skip the feature again.
As mentioned above, if Samsung does go ahead with its own NPU consumers can expect it to make an appearance inside the Galaxy S10 series. This means that it will presumably be part of the upcoming Exynos 9820 chip.
