It’s easy to deride the notch, but unless you like handling your super-expensive phone with kid gloves, it’s a lot harder to find a practical way of killing the bezels we’ve all been complaining about for ages.
Of course, there’s more than one way to cut out a smartphone screen and retain enough space for a selfie shooter and various necessary sensors. The iPhone X needs a wide notch to work its Face ID magic, while companies like Sharp and Essential can make do with the smallest of cutouts.
Then there’s Google, which will reportedly adopt a huge Pixel 3 XL notch for no apparent reason, and at the other end of the spectrum, a very ingenious “Waterdrop Screen” design from Oppo.
This is a company that’s made its way among the world’s top five smartphone vendors through strong sales in China and India and fairly unorthodox marketing. Its next big phone is set to be launched in countries like Vietnam and the Philippines on August 15, followed by India on the 21st, but we already know everything about it straight from the horse’s mouth.
That unique design was revealed a little while ago, and the specs and features have been confirmed this week. Branded Oppo F9 in Vietnam and the Philippines, and F9 Pro in India, this absolute looker will offer an impressive 90.8 percent screen-to-body ratio, thanks to that minuscule, water drop-inspired notch.
Proprietary VOOC Flash Charge support is set to be a key selling point, letting you squeeze a full two hours of talk time out of a large 3,500 mAh battery after just five minutes of charging. The 6.3-inch display will sport fairly standard 2280 x 1080 (aka FHD+) resolution, and three gradient color options (Sunrise Red, Twilight Blue and Starry Purple) shall contribute to the F9’s eye-catching looks.
Officially priced at the rough equivalent of $320 and up in Vietnam, the Oppo F9 has a few other things going for it too, including a respectable Helio P60 processor, dual 16 + 2MP rear-facing cameras, a phenomenal-sounding 25MP selfie shooter, and a solid combination of 4GB RAM and 64GB internal storage space.
While the odds of this ever being released in the US or Western Europe are slim, to say the least, the OnePlus 6T could look extremely similar. If that’s the case, are you willing to embrace the notch now?
