Nubia X hands-on: Two displays, two fingerprint scanners, almost no bezels
Although CES 2019 was not very prolific in terms of new phones, we still get to witness in person the design trends that will likely persists throughout 2019. From foldable phones like the Royole FlexPai, to phones with hole-in-display design like the Honor View 20, and finally with the star of this hands-on, the dual-screen Nubia X, we got to see it all.
Taking a page from the same book that treated us to the Vivo NEX, the Nubia X is a device that would most likely turn heads due to its pretty obvious, telltale design highlights - the dual-screen setup that has allowed the complete forgoing of a selfie camera at the front as well as the nearly bezel-less display that spans edge to edge and doesn't boast a notch of any sort. That's not a new concept, but there's definitely more going on with the Nubia X.
For example, instead of utilizing a button to switch between the front LCD display and the rear AMOLED one, the Nubia X utilizes a nifty squeeze gesture that's essentially similar to the one the Pixels employ. You squeeze the frame, and voila, the other display will light up and become active. This is certainly a boon to multitasking as you delegate the essential feature of switching between the two displays to an intuitive gesture.
Aside from being a fully-functional display, the rear one also functions as action buttons while playing games, a gaming-oriented feature that is similar to the Nubia Red Magic Mars and the Vivo NEX.
There are also power buttons with fingerprint scanners on both sides of the phone, meaning you can pick up the Nubia X, unlock it, and go on your merry way without having to fiddle and turn it around. Another plus of this unorthodox setup is that you can unlock your phone with either your left or right thumb. Despite having pretty thin bezels and two displays, the Nubia X doesn't employ an overly-thick or heavy body. Quite the contrary - it feels as regular as any other high-end phone released recently in spite of its certainly unique design.
