The Honor 8X could come with a tiny notch and huge screen

Released in China last fall, and expanded stateside shortly thereafter, as well as across major European markets, the Honor 7X is still one of the best smartphones around in the sub-$250 category.

But naturally, Huawei’s online-focused sub-brand is cooking up an even better device likely to be launched at a similarly low price point sometime soon. Two possible Honor 8X designs surfaced online from two different sources just yesterday, both following Apple-started trends. One of them appears to closely resemble a recent Oppo release, which in turn was arguably inspired by the Essential Phone and various “edge-to-edge” Sharp handsets.

We still can’t be 100 percent certain this “waterdrop” notch-adopting ARE-AL00 model certified in China recently will go official as the Honor 8X, but whatever it is, the phone sports a gigantic screen.

That’s right, the full spec sheet is already out, thanks to Tenaa’s long-established transparency, including a... 7.12-inch display. Yup, this bad boy is larger than certain conventional tablets. Believe it or not, the prime Honor 8X suspect manages to squeeze all that screen into a respectably compact body, measuring 177.57 x 86.24 x 8.13 mm. That’s ever so slightly taller, a tad narrower, and about as thin as the 6.9-inch Xiaomi Mi Max 3, which features pretty slim borders itself.

The ARE-AL00 is also 11 grams lighter than the Mi Max 3, although at 210 grams, it’s not exactly what we’d call a featherweight. Under the hood, a 4,900 mAh battery will be in charge of keeping the lights on. That sounds like more than enough juice to get you through your typical work day (and party night), but we’ve also seen better.

The same goes for those dual 16 + 2MP rear-facing shooters and single 8MP selfie camera, while the 1.8 GHz processor is unspecified (rumors say Kirin 710), pairing with 4GB RAM for decent performance... all things considered. Other seemingly confirmed specifications include Android 8.1 Oreo software, 64GB internal storage space, and 2244 x 1080 screen resolution yielding a somewhat unusual 18.7:9 aspect ratio.
