Galaxy S10 durability test proves the fingerprint scanner is not easy to damage

If you've been thinking about pre-ordering Samsung's hot new Galaxy S10, but you're not sure how the phone might handle scratches, flames, and bending attempts, it doesn't look like you have a lot to be worried about. Similar to the company's past few flagships, the "regular" variant of this year's next big thing is unsurprisingly built like a tank, as discovered by professional destroyer of mobile devices and popular YouTuber Zack Nelson from JerryRigEverything.

Gone are the days when Nelson was able to flex new high-end phones with his bare hands, although the occasional minor bend can still happen for certain models from lower-profile brands. Not in Samsung's court, and no matter how hard you try, you'll never manage to scratch the triple camera setup on the back of the Galaxy S10 or the single "Cheerio" shooter (copyright by Zack Nelson) on its front.

That's obviously because all four cameras are neatly protected by a thick slab of robust Gorilla Glass 6, which also covers the 6.1-inch Infinity-O display to provide a fairly standard level of durability for Android flagships nowadays. Naturally, it is possible to scratch that beautiful screen, which is why Samsung offers a plastic protector as standard with all GS10 models, but your everyday keys and coins will not cause much damage even if you remove the protective accessory.

What you should probably be careful of is damage around the ultrasonic fingerprint-scanning area. Since the state-of-the-art biometric sensor is hidden beneath the screen, cracking the glass will almost surely disable the fingerprint reader.

That may sound problematic, but on the decidedly bright side of things, a substantial amount of abuse is "required" for the fingerprint sensor to stop working. We're talking the kind of abuse that doesn't just happen on an everyday basis for the average user. Otherwise put, "normal" scratches can't hurt it, but a violent drop onto a hard surface could "do the trick."
