The flagship Motorola Edge+ 5G looks stunning in these leaked renders
Motorola exited the flagship smartphone segment two years ago following the huge failure that was the Moto Z2 Force. But with 5G connectivity sparking interest among consumers, the Lenovo-owned company has spotted an opportunity to re-enter the market.
The new smartphone is set to be marketed as the Motorola Edge+ and new renders courtesy of Steve Hemmerstoffer and PriceBaba explain why.
A waterfall display with a tiny punch hole
In a serious attempt to differentiate itself from the increasingly generic crowd, the Motorola Edge+ features a large waterfall display complete with very pronounced curves on either side, hence the unique name, and impressively thin bezels which even include a small chin.
Steve Hemmerstoffer believes the display measures in somewhere between 6.5-inches and 6.8-inches, which coincides perfectly with reports of a 6.67-inch screen. A Full-HD+ resolution alongside a smooth 90Hz refresh rate has also been tipped, although Hemmerstoffer hasn't corroborated these details.
Most smartphone brands competing in the flagship segment this year are expected to adopt punch-hole selfie camera implementations on their devices and Motorola will be no different. But if these CAD-based renders are anything to go by, the cut out could be so small that it's barely noticeable.
Thanks to the slim bezels and curved edges, the Motorola Edge+ reportedly measures in at just 161.1 x 71.3 x 9.5mm. To compare, the 6.7-inch Galaxy S20+ stands at 161.9 x 73.7 x 7.8 mm and the 6.67-inch OnePlus 7T Pro lands at 162.6 x 75.9 x 8.8 mm.
Three rear cameras and LED lighting around the logo
Turning the Motorola Edge+ over reveals a vertical camera setup positioned in the top-left corner of the glass panel. However, unlike rival brands that push the module right into the corner, Motorola has lowered its cameras a little and placed a noise canceling microphone above it, which itself is paired with a second one at the bottom of the rear panel.
The camera setup itself integrates three bumps within a larger bump, kind of like the iPhone 11 Pro series. Detailed specifications are yet to leak, but a high-resolution main camera seems very likely alongside an ultra-wide-angle shooter and a telephoto alternative.
Next to these sensors sits a dual-LED flash and what appears to be a laser autofocus system, although it could also be a dedicated Time-of-Flight sensor for improved portrait photography.
Completing the package on the back of Motorola's flagship is the company's famous batwing logo. It's surrounded by an LED ring which presumably doubles as a notification indicator.
Flagships specs, massive battery, headphone jack
Verizon confirmed in a recent press release that Motorola's flagship will be powered by the Snapdragon 865 chipset and Snapdragon X55 modem, therefore guaranteeing support on the carriers expanding 5G network thanks to sub-6GHz and mmWave technologies.
Internal storage remains a complete mystery at the moment but 128GB as standard seems pretty likely. The cheapest variant is also expected to feature 8GB of RAM, although a pricier version with 12GB is reportedly on the way.
Like most other Motorola phones, the Motorola Edge+ will ship with a near-stock Android 10 experience. It should be coupled with a massive 5,170mAh battery that should provide outstanding battery life.
Other features include an in-screen fingerprint scanner, a bottom-firing speaker, and a USB-C port with support for fast charging. Last on the list is a textured power button and a 3.5mm headphone jack on top of the smartphone.
Motorola Edge+ announcement and availability
The Motorola Edge+ was initially set to be unveiled at MWC 2020 last week. However, the Chicago-based company was forced to cancel its press conference due to the coronavirus outbreak.
A new unveiling date is yet to be announced but an introduction at some point later this month or in April seems extremely likely. Verizon is expected to be the exclusive carrier in the United States while international availability is yet to be confirmed but Europe will almost certainly receive the phone.
