Everything We Know About The Stranger Things Mobile Game Coming in 2020
Netflix has plans to work on a Stranger Things mobile game that would let players explore the world of the Upside Down. The game would take inspiration from the hit TV series on the streaming subscription provider.
This mobile game is not, however, the same game as Stranger Things 3: The Game, which Netflix announced at the 2018 Game Awards. That title will follow events of the third season of the TV show and launch on consoles, PC and mobile. Instead, this is an entirely new mobile game experience for iOS and Android that will let players explore the creepy world of the Upside Down. The game is in development by Next Games, a company known for its The Walking Dead mobile titles.
Netflix unveiled details about the new mobile game in a press release the company sent out a few days ago, emphasizing how it focuses on the friendships of the TV show, as well as their shared supernatural adventure. The announcement didn't go too deep into anything specific, but here's what else fans can expect from the Stranger Things mobile game.
THE STRANGER THINGS MOBILE GAME IS A LOCATION-BASED PUZZLE/RPG GAME
One of the key details about the Stranger Things mobile game is that it will be location-based and use GPS to allow players to explore the world of the Upside Down in their own environments on their phones. It's not clear, though, as to whether this will be similar to augmented reality games, such as Pokemon Go. Gameplay will feature a combination of puzzles and RPG, so it will be interesting to see how that plays into location.

The beautiful thing about the Stranger Things TV show is that it is delightfully 1980s in all its colorful glory, right down to the show's underlying aesthetic. So it would make sense that the Stranger Things mobile game will take inspiration from that theme for its look and feel, as well as its artwork. Netflix revealed that the Stranger Things mobile game will feature animation art similar to that in 1980s Saturday morning cartoons.

Although Netflix remained tight-lipped about a lot of the gameplay details of the Stranger Things mobile game, it did say that the title would launch sometime in 2020 for iOS and Android. That's a year after Stranger Things 3: The Game, which could suggest that the mobile game will release with the fourth season of the series. Early rumors have suggested that the fourth season of Stranger Things could be the last, so it would make sense to go out with a bang with a new season and a video game.
Although it might have seemed weird to have Netflix turn up at E3, the company seems to have a plan moving forward with games based on its original properties. The Stranger Things mobile game is just one of many that the company has planned, and fans can also expect even more choose-your-own adventure game-like experiences on its service.
