I'm new to torrenting and was wondering what good trackers there are for newbies. Preferably gaming or anime orientated.

Hmmm, i recommend starting with TorrentLeech, they open once in 3 months, and they are best for general releases.Highly recommended.Staffs are friendly and easy to maintain ratio there.

IPT, I find it the easiest tracker to seed and it has almost everything you might need.

You can get IPT from here. It will cover most of your needs.
Move to TL only if you have a seedbox. Look for OpenSigns or again find an invite here.

Is a seedbox essential for Torrentleech or can an acceptable ratio be achieved with a simple laptop? There is lot of freeleach torrent there. Can I have a hard time getting 1: 1 with a laptop?

I can suggest RED because you can enter without an invite, and because you can cross seed WEB releases (you can find them in free trackers like rutracker) and obtain a good invite section to get invites and migrate to other tracker.

TL surely requires a seedbox. Why not get into HD-Space or HD-Torrents. You will have better chances if you show proofs from the 2. Also their invite forums are better than no invites forums from TL.

I dont think TL requires seedbox. I usually download 20-50gigs remuxes from TL(freeleech), my download never seems to increase, easy upload at TL. The hardest i found are HD trackers, the likes of Blutopia, BeyondHD, etc which have very less freeleech torrents.

Personally i would say, try to get into TorrentDay or SceneTime for latest released content (as they require only 3 days seedtime). My personal favourite is TorrentBD (Bangladeshi tracker), as it too has very good pretimes on new content(they have everything related to Hollywood and latest EVO releases) and only 2 days seedtime and anything above 10gb is freeleech.
IPT requires freaking 2 weeks of seedtime
TL too requires 8 days of seedtime for PowerUsers.

IPT and TL can be used for rare or old content, because they always seem to have good seeders on it.
TorrentBD, torrentDay or Seedtime are good choices to start from (but IPT/TL definitely required for backup or rare content)
