I'd say you need not only luck but a LOT of patience and it's exhausting. I fully understand what you say about the help channel not being manned 24/7 and never expected it to be, but communication is extremely difficult. I've been a member for a few years now and never experienced problems like i had. Registering as a new member back then was simple but i've no idea how it is now for anyone wanting to join.

Congratulations on being able to recover your account. My understanding was prior to the site closing registrations, one could easily open several accounts, and did, and it wasn't nearly as hard nor complicated as it is now. Since they have closed registrations, one can only register a new account by way of an invite, which I am told are hard to come across and it seems as tho' many out there would jump at the chance to have the opportunity to even receive an invite, so those who have any are holding on to them and giving them out sparingly since they are hard to come by. At least that is what I am being told.
