Watch Arctic Monkeys perform low-key version of ‘A Certain Romance’
The lads pulled out another classic for their home crowd
Arctic Monkeys surprised fans with a stripped-back performance of ‘A Certain Romance’ during the final show of their hometown stint last night (September 22). Check out a clip of the moment below.
During the gig at Sheffield’s FlyDSA Arena, Alex Turner performed the ‘Whatever People Say I Am…’ track solo as a minimal drum machine loop played behind. The Monkeys haven’t performed the classic song since 2014’s ‘AM’ shows – in which Turner played an acoustic version.
Previous Sheffield shows this week have seen the band dust off ‘Mardy Bum‘, ‘Fluorescent Adolescent‘ and ‘No. 1 Party Anthem’ – with neither being featured elsewhere on the ‘Tranquility Base…’ tour.
On Friday evening (September 21), John Cooper Clarke introduced the band on stage with a reading of his 1982 poem, ‘I Wanna Be Yours’. The Monkeys turned Cooper Clarke’s words into a track of the same name for their fifth album ‘AM’.
Arctic Monkeys will wrap up their UK tour with two nights in Newcastle next week, before heading to the US.
‘Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino’, the band’s sixth studio album, was released in May. In a four-star review, NME described the record as “a product of searingly intelligent design”.
The divisive LP was nominated for this year’s Mercury Prize, which was won by Wolf Alice. Arctic Monkeys bagged the award in 2006 for their debut.
