During the pre-show interviews, frontman Jared Leto promised a riveting, first-of-its-kind show, and -- for those watching at home, at least -- his band did have a pretty bonkers concept in mind.

Thirty Seconds to Mars have a new album on the way and the veteran rock band performed its lead single for the first time tonight (Aug. 27) at the 2017 MTV Video Music Awards.
About an hour after frontman Jared Leto's poignant tribute to Chester Bennington and Chris Cornell, he re-took the stage alongside his bandmates to bring "Walk on Water" to life for the first time. But this was no ordinary award show performance. During the pre-show interviews, Leto promised a riveting, first-of-its-kind show, and -- for those watching at home, at least -- his band did have a pretty bonkers concept in mind.
When the trio took the stage, the background went completely black, and their bodies were illuminated in blurry, distorted, multi-colored hues, similar to the effect of infrared radiation. To those watching on hand at the Forum, however, it looked like an ordinary routine, with the band mugging it up for nearby cameras. At least for home viewers, Thirty Seconds to Mars, its small backing choreo troupe and guest star Travis Scott looked unlike anyone else at the VMAs.
30STM unveiled the new song with a lyric video back on Aug. 22. It's the first sampling from the arena rockers' forthcoming fifth studio album, which is expected to arrive later this year via Interscope Records.
