Thom Yorke appears to back US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

The proposed plans would address climate change and economic inequality

Thom Yorke appears to be backing US Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal proposal.

The Radiohead frontman retweeted a video the politician posted giving an economist’s case for the deal. “Our future is imperiled, our economy is fragile, and frontline communities are vulnerable to major threats from rising sea levels to lead in our water,” Ocasio-Cortez captioned the post. “A #GreenNewDeal is a common sense, moral solution to fix these issues with the urgency they demand.”

The Green New Deal, of which the New York Democrat is a leading advocate, seeks to address climate change and economic instability. It wants the US to use 100 percent renewable, zero-energy emission sources. It also calls for universal health care, fair minimum wages, and preventing monopolies, as well as aiming to address poverty by improving services for vulnerable communities.

While Yorke has not personally commented on the congressional resolution, he is a well-known supporter of environmental activism. In the past, he has supported the likes of Greenpeace, CND, and Friends Of The Earth. Climate change is a subject that has featured in his music, including the solo track ‘Hands Off The Antarctic.’

Meanwhile, Yorke recently compared Theresa May’s handling of Brexit to the early days of Adolf Hitler’s Germany. “Nobody voted for you to bring into question the lives of millions of Europeans as a bargaining tool, causing immense distress and suffering, an action worthy of the early days of the third reich,” he wrote on Twitter. “Fear is not a weapon to be used by a UK Prime Minister in the 21st Century. Stop the bus…now.”

Last year, the musician hinted that a future solo album could take influence from politics. “I didn’t have the wish to make politically charged music, but everything I do goes that way anyways”, he explained. “I’m trying to finish a record with Nigel [Godrich] and it’s going that way. It’s something that’s always there.”
