Victoria Beckham has laughed about how the Spice Girls avoided being associated with porn.

The 41-year-old fashion designer rose to fame as Posh Spice in the all-girl group, which was also comprised of Melanie Chisholm, Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton and Geri Halliwell.

When the band first got together in 1994, they had to steer clear of the initial moniker they wanted so as not to be associated with a seedy organisation.

"In the beginning, we were going to be The Spicy Girls, but then we realised there was a porn site called the Spicy Girls. That wouldn't have been good!" she joked while conversing with Fern Mallis at New York City's 92nd St. Y event this week.

The Spice Girls all had unique nicknames, Mel B was 'Scary Spice', Mel C 'Sporty Spice', Emma 'Baby Spice', Geri 'Ginger Spice' and Victoria of course was dubbed 'Posh Spice'.

Victoria claimed their aliases were generated largely by the public.

"Posh was given to us by a British teen magazine, but we were already acting like our names,' she recalled.

"Mel B really did dress scary, always in leopard print. Emma really was Baby; she always wore pigtails and those bloody awful platform shoes! But I'm still very close to all of those girls.

"I'm really proud of what I achieved with them. We were just five girls who weren't all that great individually, but together, we were pretty great!"

Victoria also revealed she had very humble beginnings.

The star had no idea she would become so famous.

"I was never going to be a model. I studied dance until I was qualified to be a dance teacher,' Victoria shared. 'My mom said I had to have something to fall back on if it all went wrong. So if it does go wrong, I can always be a tap-dancing teacher."
