American singer-songwriter and actor, Prince (Prince Rogers Nelson), is once again in the news for launching another copyright war against his fans. This time he is suing 22 internet users for posting links to bootleg copies of his live concerts on Facebook pages and blogs. The plaintiffs cited shared bootlegs such as Prince's March 24, 2011 performance in Charlotte, North Carolina, his April 24, 2002 show in Oakland, California, and an April 10, 1983 concert in Chicago, Illinois. He is suing each defendant for no less than $1M dollars each, for a total of $22 million dollars in the lawsuit.

The Consequence of Sound reported that the 21 page lawsuit was filed last week in San Francisco's U.S. district court. According to a court document, the defendants are accused of engaging in "massive infringement and bootlegging of Prince's material", with each web page contributing to "up to thousands of separate acts of infringement and bootlegging".

Two defendants are named, eight are being identified only by their online nicknames, and the remaining 22 defendants are yet to be identified and are referred to as “Does” in the lawsuit. Three of the online nicknames mentioned in the lawsuit are PurpleHouse2, PurpleKissTwo and NPRUNIVERSE, which is a good indication that Prince is suing some very loyal fans.

Prince’s copyright war began in September of 2007, where he stated that he was going to sue YouTube and eBay because, in his opinion, they "are clearly able [to] filter porn and pedophile material but appear to choose not to filter out the unauthorized music and film content which is core to their business success."

In May of 2013, EFF (The Electronic Frontier Foundation) inducted Prince into the Hall of Shame with a Lifetime Raspberry Beret Aggrievement Award . EFF stated that this was a result of extraordinary abuses of the takedown process in the name of silencing speech.

Prince is planning to release another album later this year titled “PLECTRUMELECTRUM".
