Pete Doherty teases new music ahead of solo UK tour
The musician shared a short video online of him playing with a band
Pete Doherty has teased new music in a new video post.
The clip appears in an official Instagram post and features the Libertine playing with a band of unidentified musicians in what looks like a DIY studio setup or rehearsal room. The song being played is a slow, keyboard-led piece with a lethargic, psychedelic sound.
Doherty doesn’t play or sing in the clip. Instead, he is seen standing behind a microphone with the band of a large pair of headphones over his eyes. He captioned the post: “The start of something more…” You can watch it below now.
The musician is set to head out on a short tour this weekend (January 27), beginning a run of four dates in Liverpool. A tweet announcing the shows promised “more news & dates to follow.”
Doherty will play:
January 2019
27 – Liverpool, Hanger 34
28 – Glasgow, King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut
30 – Carlisle, The Old Fire Station
31 – Newcastle, Riverside
The musician released his last solo album, ‘Hamburg Demonstrations’, in 2016. In a four-star review, NME said the record sounded “like a long-overdue coming-of-age”, adding: “It’s never been easy being a fan of Doherty, but it’s certainly getting more rewarding.”
Doherty recently donated a selection of his own artwork to an exhibition and auction that aimed to rehabilitate prisoners. His pieces were displayed in a pop-up gallery in Margate for the Stretch charity’s Outsider Art Festival.
Meanwhile, The Libertines have been working on building their own studio at their Margate hotel, The Albion Rooms.
Doherty’s bandmate Carl Barât gave an update on the band’s new material last summer, saying he had “lots of ideas” for the follow-up to 2015’s ‘Anthems For Doomed Youth’.
