Hear the album first and get the lowdown

Tonight, NME Radio will be hosting a listening party and playback of Foals‘ brilliant new album ‘Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost Part 1‘ – complete with an exclusive interview of the band’s thoughts on each track.

NME sat down with frontman Yannis Philippakis and guitarist Jimmy Smith to get the lowdown on the origins, inspiration and evolution of each song on their forthcoming fifth album – the first of two records coming in 2019, and one that takes in Balearic beats, sci-fi synths, prog rock riffs and a touch of the cinematic to reflect “this post-millennial dread that everyone’s swimming in”.

To hear the album first along with the band’s own insight, tune into NME 1 at 00.01am on Friday March 8.

It will then be replayed at 6pm on NME 2 on Sunday March 10. Click here to find out more about how you can listen to NME Radio.

In our five-star review of the album, NME concluded: “Regardless of where you checked in on Foals’ journey – or, heaven forbid, checked out again – there’s something to sink into on ‘Everything Not Saved… Part 1’. The intricacies and experimentalism of those math-rock early days, the spacey ambience of ‘Total Life Forever’, and the bolshy production brilliance of those last two records: it’s all here. If this is just the first act of ‘Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost’, then this era may just prove to be Foals’ making.”

“The lyrical threads are through both records,” Philippakis told NME. “It’s not yin and yang or anything corny like that. You can also tell that it’s a band working in the same space over the same period of time. If you were to put it crudely, the first record is probably more keyboard-driven and has slightly more of a new wave feel to it. Then album two has more of the heavier rock frenetic energy. “

Drummer Jack Bevan added: “It felt like the fight in between the members of the band in order to edit it into the size of one album would have just been too brutal.

“The tracks work together. There are a lot of pairings on both records, and little groups of tracks that are friends to each other.”

Foals release ‘Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost Part 1’ on Friday, March 8. ‘Part 2’ will follow in the Autumn.
