This looks pretty special...

Massive Attack kicked off their ‘Mezzanine’ tour with a dazzling performance in Glasgow last night.

The show, which belatedly marked 20 years of the seminal record, saw the trip-hop icons performing the album in full while backed by one of their most accomplished production set-ups to date.

After opening with a cover of The Velvet Underground‘s ‘I Found A Reason’, the show saw the Bristol band go straight into ‘Risingson’.

A debut cover of The Cure‘s ’10:15 Saturday Night’ then followed – marking one of the first times that they’ve covered the Goth icons. They were joined by Cocteau Twins‘ Elizabeth Fraser on guest vocals.

The show also saw the band debut their visual collaboration with film maker Adam Curtis – who has provided visuals to accompany the entire album.

In a statement, Curtis explained that the gigs “will the story of the strange journey we have all been on over the past twenty years since ‘Mezzanine’ was released: How we have moved into a strange backward-looking world, enclosed by machines that read our data and predict our every move, haunted by ghosts from the past.

“A pleasure dome that makes us feel safe from the endless wars outside, and plays back stories both of dreams of glory and the fear of others. But in that safe world suspicion and distrust is spreading — like a virus. The air is growing stale. Everyone sees conspiracies everywhere. But maybe suspicion is control?”

They’ll continue the UK tour with a show at Manchester Arena tonight (January 29) before continuing the tour next month.
