Fidel Glasgow was fatally stabbed in Coventry on September 1

A man has been arrested on suspicion of murdering the grandson of The Specials singer Neville Staple.

Fidel Glasgow, 21, was fatally stabbed during an altercation in the early hours of September 1, near Coventry’s Club M nightclub. He died in hospital 12 hours later.

West Midlands Police have confirmed a 23-year-old man was arrested on Monday and is being questioned in relation to Glasgow’s death. “We have not let up our search for Fidel’s killer and this is significant progress in our investigation,” Detective Inspector Harry Harrison said.

“However, this does not mean that we no longer need witnesses to come forward,” he added. “I am still appealing for anyone with information to get in touch. It may be the crucial bit of the jigsaw that we need.

“Fidel’s family have been fully updated with the latest development and continue to be supported by specialist officers.”

Staple spoke at a press conference last week where he and his family appealed to members of the public to come forward for information on Glasgow’s murder. “There’s a lot of people who tried to help and step in, so those are the kind of people we need to come forward and say what they saw, and what they did to help,” he reportedly said.

Following Glasgow’s death, the Specials singer thanked hospital staff for trying to save him and fans for their messages in a post on his official Facebook page. “We are truly devastated to announce the heartbreaking loss of my grandson Fidel (my daughter Melanie’s son), who died today as a result of being attacked with a knife in the street,” he wrote.

He added: “We ask that you help us turn our pain into a message. Let’s show the young people that this knife trend has to stop.”
