Madonna has been named as the world's highest-paid musician by Forbes.

The singer, who was also named as the highest-earning celebrity of 2013 by the same publication, topped the list after making $125 million (£77 million) from June 2012 to this year.

Her earnings, which were derived from her extensive 'MDNA' world tour as well as income from merchandise sales, a clothing line and perfume brand, were enough to put her ahead of Lady Gaga, who came second with $80 million (£49.6 million).

Gaga just pipped Bon Jovi's earnings of $79 million (£46 million), with Toby Keith ($65 million; £40.3 million) and Coldplay ($64 million; £39.7 million) in fourth and fifth. Justin Bieber, Taylor Swift, Elton John, Beyoncé and Kenny Chesney rounded out the rest of the Top 10, while Diddy, Paul McCartney, Calvin Harris, Rihanna and Muse were among those who made the Top 20.

In September of this year, Madonna said she wanted to work with Daft Punk and hinted that she could release a new album in 2014. Her last studio album, 'MDNA', was released in 2012 and became the singer's 12th Number One on the UK's Official Albums Chart.
