Lorde to Curate, Release New Single for New 'Hunger Games' Soundtrack
Lorde will curate and release the lead single for the upcoming soundtrack to The Hunger Games: Mockingjay — Part 1, which opens in theaters on November 21st. The soundtrack is also scheduled for release this fall, via Republic Records, though a release date for both the soundtrack and Lorde's new song has yet to be confirmed.
"Curating the soundtrack for such a hotly-anticipated film was a challenge, but I jumped at the chance," Lorde said in a statement. "The cast and story are an inspiration for all musicians participating and, as someone with cinematic leanings, being privy to a different creative process has been a unique experience. I think the soundtrack is definitely going to surprise people."
The 17-year old singer was an obvious choice to head up the Mockingjay soundtrack, having contributed a harrowing cover of Tears for Fears' "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" to the soundtrack for the previous Hunger Games film, Catching Fire.
Taking charge of the soundtrack to the anticipated film is another big moment in Lorde's brief, yet brilliant, career: Her surprise number one smash, "Royals," picked up Grammys for Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance. Back in March, Nirvana tapped the singer to perform "All Apologies" at the group's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction. And topping it off, the New Zealander not only graced the cover of Rolling Stone, but received perhaps the greatest honor any pop star can receive: A "Weird Al" Yankovic parody.
Lorde is currently scheduled to play Lollapalooza in Chicago on Friday, August 1st, and will kick off a North American tour on September 5th at the Mann Center in Philadelphia.
