Howard Shore's "Lord of The Rings" soundtrack remains at the top of the music soundtrack Hall of Fame

The soundtrack to The Lord Of The Rings has been voted the top movie theme for the sixth year running.

Thousands of Classic FM listeners chose the music in the fantasy trilogy ahead of runner-up Schindler's List and Gladiator in third place.

The winning music, written by Howard Shore, led the top 10 which included theme tunes from Jurassic Park and Star Wars.

Elijah Wood, who played Frodo Baggins in The Lord Of The Rings trilogy, told Classic FM: "The music is a huge part of the identity of those films.

"I think film scores are always extremely important with regard to the atmosphere and the emotional connection that you have to a film. Those pieces of music - you think about the Hobbiton theme - they're really iconic.

"They sort of transcend the films themselves, almost like John Williams' (scores). The pieces from Star Wars are so iconic. We hear the music, we know the films and I think to a certain degree that's the case with Rings too, with Howard Shore's score."

Meanwhile, Williams has again been voted the nation's favourite composer of film music with eight entries in the top 30, including Jurassic Park, Saving Private Ryan, E.T. The Extra Terrestrial and Raiders Of The Lost Ark.

With Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens out next month, Williams's theme reached fourth place in the chart, behind his score for Schindler's List and Hans Zimmer's Gladiator.

There was a surge in the popularity of film music composed by James Horner, who was killed in a plane crash in June - with his four entries Braveheart, Titanic, Apollo 13 and Avatar climbing up the chart.

Zimmer's score to Interstellar, starring Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway, is the chart's highest new entry at number 43.

There were 21,000 votes in the Classic FM Movie Music Hall of Fame poll.
