Kendrick Lamar and Imagine Dragons have a musical bromance on their hands.

Following an explosive outing at the Grammy Awards ceremony last week, Imagine Dragons once again joined forces with Kendrick Lamar on last night’s episode of Saturday Night Live. While the Las Vegas group had been announced to be making their first appearance ever on SNL earlier this week, the pairing of Lamar with Imagine Dragons was a relative surprise. Though to be fair, Imagine Dragons did tweet earlier that day that they had something up their sleeves for their landmark performance on the sketch comedy show:

We play SNL tonight… tune in for some surprises. We’ll be playing songs from Night Visions, @itunesmusic here: http://t.co/45oUdFofsd

Imagine Dragons, after being introduced by host Melissa McCarthy, bristled through a rousing performance of their hit song Radioactive. It wasn’t until the two-and-a-half minute mark that the band scurried into positions behind multiple drum sets to perform the official rendition of their recently recorded “Radioactive” remix with Kendrick Lamar. Sure enough, after a frenzied pounding of the drums, the spotlight shifted to a hooded figure at the center of the stage who revealed himself to be the Grammy nominated rapper.

Much like the original take performed at last week’s Grammy Awards, a pairing that was clearly the talk of the night, the energy level and excitement by this performance was equaled, if not rivaled once again. There was a hush from the crowd when Kendrick emerged under the spotlight and the band’s enthusiasm for his inclusion certainly was an indication the group welcomed the collaboration once again. After Kendrick rattled off his frenzied verses, Imagine Dragons lead singer Dan Reynolds jumped right back under his microphone and finished off the final bars to the impressively anthemic song.

This has been a breakthrough year for Imagine Dragons. Prior to their buzzed about performance at the Grammys, the band was riding a wave of success on their own with their debut album Night Visions. Aside from Radioactive, the album also boasts two other hit singles, It’s Time and Demons, both of which have been receiving tremendous radio airplay. But success hasn’t gone to the head of the group according to an interview conducted by the Chicago Tribune with Reynolds and his wife earlier last year:

“A year ago we were playing for, like, 40 people,” Reynolds mentioned in the article. “Now we’re at the point where everything is sold-out beforehand. We can actually breath and enjoy the music. It’s the best feeling ever.”

And by the look of things, it’s about to get even better for Imagine Dragons.
