A new album will be out this autumn from Janet Jackson.

Jackson has started her own label, Rhythm Nation Records, which has partnered with BMG for the new fall release, her first since 2008's Discipline. Janet also plans to nurture new artists on her label along with bringing in established stars.

The deal reportedly makes Jackson one of the biggest stars to reject the traditional record label model for an artist service deal where the artist retains ownership of their recordings and full oversight of all costs and revenues.

There also may be a much bigger financial risk. Roger Friedman at Showbiz411.com reports that Janet and her husband, Wissam al Mana, will be footing all the bills for everything related to the release and that record will, most likely, just a promotional tool for a much bigger tour where the money will be made.

Jackson said of the deal "Thank you to the talented team at BMG, my new artistic home. The opportunity to be creative in music and every form of entertainment has great potential here."

Hartwig Masuch, BMG CEO, said "Janet is not just a supreme artist, she is a unique cultural force whose work resonates around the world. It is an honor that she has chosen BMG to release her long-awaited new album. We look forward to collaborating with her across every platform."

According to the RIAA, Janet Jackson has sold 26 million albums in the U.S., tied for 74th on the all time list. As far as female vocalists and female-based acts, she is number 12:

Barbra Streisand - 72.5 million
