"Writing like we have never done it before."

IDLES have shared a video update after confirming to fans that they are already working on their new album.

The Bristol punk band released their five-star second album ‘Joy As An Act Of Resistance‘ last August, which went on to be named one of NME’s Best Albums Of 2018.

Now, the band have shared an Instagram video that shows them back in a Bristol studio to begin work on their third record.

It comes after they previously confirmed the news on Twitter, via the medium of one of their beautiful haikus.

Writing on Twitter, they shared:

“IDLES album 3 Haiku.

Oh hello new year!
There’s no time like the present
To write album three”

Their second album ‘Joy As An Act Of Resistance’ was revered for its brutal honesty in tackling toxic masculinity, death, self-love and immigration.

“I think there’s a new fascination with [toxic masculinity] because it’s articulated well,” frontman Joe Talbot told NME. “Once you’ve got something complex that you can articulate concisely, it allows a conversation that’s fluid, and then your mind works quicker.”

He continued: “The thinking behind it is a reaction to the fact that feminism came to be in the forefront of people’s thinking – feminism is necessary because of toxic masculinity. Once feminism enters the public consciousness, you can start looking at the other side of it. ‘What is the cause of all this?’ And then it’s about looking for a solution, to a better future.”

Meanwhile, Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker recently discussed his love for IDLES with NME. In a new interview, the screenwriter said: “Apart from anything else, they’re funny,” he said. “There is something about positive punk that I thought, ‘Why hasn’t..? Hold on, that’s a new thing, isn’t it? How comes no one’s done that?’”

He continued: “If you listen to a song like ‘Danny Nedelko’ or ‘Television’, [singer Joe Talbot is] so fucking angry about being positive. He’s so furiously happy – so furiously positive in the way he shouts, ‘Unity!’ He shouts ‘Unity!’ through gritted teeth and there’s something very life-affirming about that.”
