Florence and the Machine dedicated a song to Patti Smith last night at London’s O2 Arena.

Performing their second night at the venue, the band’s frontwoman Florence Welch revealed that the track ‘Patricia’ was written for the American singer-songwriter who was watching in the crowd.

“This song is basically all for you [Patti], except for one bit in the middle which is about toxic masculinity,” Welch said. You can view the performance below.

Flanked by a full band of eight musicians, much of their set featured cuts from recent album ‘High As Hope’ including hit single ‘Hunger’ and a first live outing for ‘Grace’ which Welch, who walked barefoot throughout the show in a long flowing green dress, dedicated to her family who were also watching in the crowd. Throughout the show, she performed a number of hits including ‘What Kind Of Man’, ‘Ship To Wreck’ along with debut album fan favourites ‘Cosmic Love’ and ‘Dog Days Are Over’. During the latter Welch stopped midway through the song to urge “every person in here to turn to each other and embrace each other” before calling on the crowd to put away their phones so they could enjoy the “moment”.

Later, during ‘Delilah’ she ran through the crowd, into the mixing desk and pogoed her way through the audience before making her way back to the front of the stage.

Florence wrapped up the show with ‘Big God’ and ‘Shake It Out’.
