Grohl released a documentary about the making of Play this past summer.

Dave Grohl recruited members of Them Crooked Vultures and Jane’s Addiction for the live debut performance of his latest project, Play.

Back in August, the Foo Fighters frontman shared a documentary which showed him creating a 23-minute instrumental song, playing all seven instruments during its composition.

Said to “celebrate the rewards and challenges of dedicating a life to playing music”, the documentary – also directed by Grohl – arrived in two parts.

“Part one opens with narrated behind the scenes footage featuring discussion of the love of playing music and the lifelong relationship with an instrument, and detailing the process and challenges of recording and filming this unique performance,” a press released explained.

“Play then segues into the titular 23-minute instrumental recording. “The entire song was played by Grohl, each time on a different instrument, live for 23 minutes.”

Last night (December 8), Grohl debuted Play live for the first time at The Warren Haynes Christmas Jam 2018 in Asheville. However, as he couldn’t play all seven instruments himself, he recruited some friends for the performance.

Sharing a photo on Twitter the night before (December 7), Grohl revealed that Them Crooked Vultures bandmate Alain Johannes, Jane’s Addiction guitarist Chris Chaney, Foo Fighters collaborator Drew Hester, producer Greg Kurstin, and session musicians Jason Falkner and Barrett Jones would be joining him.

Speaking about making music in the Play documentary, Grohl says: “It’s not something that you ever truly master. You’re always chasing the next challenge, and you’re always trying to find a way to improve on what you’ve learned.”
