Footage has emerged of the recent Foo Fighters show that saw Jane’s Addiction bassist Chris Chaney standing in for Nate Mendel after he became a father to twin girls.

As the rock giants played Pittsburgh’s PPG Paints Arena last month, Chaney took Mendel’s place for a single evening as he headed back home to be with his wife.

Although it’s the first time that Chaney has played with the band, he’s enjoyed an enduring relationship with the Foos over the years. During the 1990s, he played in Alanis Morissette’s band with Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins.

Chaney and Hawkins have also played together in Taylor Hawkins and the Coattail Riders.

Incredibly, the show was only the second concert in Foo Fighters’ 24-year history in which Mendel was absent. He later returned to the band for their follow-up gig in Boston.

Meanwhile, Dave Grohl recently stepped out of the shadow of Foo Fighters to release ‘Play’, a mini-documentary which sees him playing all seven instruments during a 23-minute composition.

The documentary is split into two sections and the first opens with a narrated behind-the-scenes video that explores Grohl’s love of making and playing music.

The second shows Grohl playing every instrument on a unique instrumental recording. Grohl plays seven instruments in total with viewers able to see Grohl play each all the way through for 23 minutes.
