The Queen biopic has done very, very well at the box office

Bohemian Rhapsody has officially become the highest-grossing music biopic of all time.

The Queen biopic, which sees Rami Malek playing the late Freddie Mercury, was released at the end of October and has now grossed over $600 million (£478 million) at the box office worldwide. $175 million (£139 million) of that figure was made in the US alone, meaning the film has now raked in more profits than The Greatest Showman.

As Deadline reports, that huge overall figure – estimated to currently be $608 million (£484 million) – now means that Bohemian Rhapsody is the highest-grossing music biopic of all time after it overtook the total made by Mamma Mia! in 2008.

Speaking to Deadline, 20th Century Fox’s President of Worldwide Marketing Pam Levine and Co-President Kevin Campbell gave their take on the commercial success of the film.

“Once our marketing team saw the film, we knew immediately that our key charge was to ensure that we created a global campaign that matched the singular energy and communal exhilaration of the theatrical experience,” they explained. “Layer on top of that, a music catalogue that could, on its own, power both a film and an entire marketing campaign, and we clearly had an incredible amount with which to work.

“What we’re so proud of is that every function area within our marketing team, and our entire studio, had a hand in the success of this film. It was as global and cross-functional a campaign as we’ve ever executed, and a true team effort.”

Earlier this week, Queen‘s song ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ became the most-streamed track from the twentieth century.
