Barack Obama reveals his favourite songs of the year featuring Tom Misch, Kurt Vile
There are some surprising picks
Barack Obama has revealed his favourite songs, films and books of the year in an extensive new list.
Posting the details to his Facebook page in what he calls “a favourite tradition,” the 44th President of the United States has shared his end-of-year list so he can take a moment “to pause and reflect on the year” through the books, movies and music he found “most thought-provoking, inspiring or just plain loved.”
He kicks off the list with his favourite books with ‘Becoming’ by Michelle Obama at the top. “Obviously my favourite!” he writes, before listing his favourite films of the year including Annihilation, Black Panther and Eighth Grade.
When it comes to his favourite songs, there are a few surprises. ‘Disco Yes’ by Tom Misch and Poppy Ajudha makes it to the list, while tracks from Kurt Vile, Courtney Barnett, Chance the Rapper, The Carters and Janelle Monáe also feature. You can see his full lists below.
Last year’s list feeatured songs by Frank Ocean, SZA, Kendrick Lamar, Jay-Z and Beyoncé, Chance The Rapper, The National, U2, Bruce Springsteen, and Portugal. The Man.
Earlier this year, Barack and Michelle Obama signed a deal with Netflix which will see them producing films and TV shows for the streaming giant.
“One of the simple joys of our time in public service was getting to meet so many fascinating people from all walks of life, and to help them share their experiences with a wider audience,” the former president said at the time,” they said of the news at the time.
“That’s why Michelle and I are so excited to partner with Netflix – we hope to cultivate and curate the talented, inspiring, creative voices who are able to promote greater empathy and understanding between peoples, and help them share their stories with the entire world.”
